So I'm thinking of upgrading from my 1.5GB EVGA 580 to either a 680 or 7970
I have enough money for either but I wanna ask Facepunch's opinion on both cards. Bare in mind that I've never owned an AMD card before and that I'll be going to Uni with this PC. I'll be playing at 1080p/60fps mainly so I'd like to know how these cards would fare with titles releasing later this year
My Current Build:
i5 2500k (OC'd to 4.5GHz)
EVGA GTX 580 (1.5GB VRAM Model)
16GB Ram (RipJawX @ 1600Mhz)
ASUS P8Z77-Pro Motherboard
The 770 is an option too if possible
Apparently the 770 is better than the 680, so I would go for that instead. I don't know about the prices though.
The HD7970 has more mature drivers, but the GTX700 series is faster. Ive seen tons of complaints about the Nvidia 320 driver branch being buggy as hell and I think the GTX700 series requires that version of drivers to work.
I would go with the HD7970 because of the better power consumption, but that's just me.
The Gtx 770 is literally a 680 but better, plus its cheaper
Yeah, I'd say go with a 770. The 7970 is on average (depending on the manufacturer) only 30-40 dollars cheaper. But for a little more money you can expect far better performance on the 770. If I remember correctly there was a benchmark showing mid max and average fps on BF3, and it was near 130 for the 770, and only 80-90 on the 7970.
Well looks like I'd made the right call before I even checked back on this thread
Decided to go with an EVGA GTX 770 SC ACX, I have had a good time with my EVGA 580, so I'd figure I'd stick with EVGA. So my new card is here on Monday
Also got a free copy of the new Splinter Cell too which is pretty neat
770, because you're really not paying that much more for the better technology.
7970 honestly has really stable drivers, but from what I've heard from friends the 770 works like a charm (although buggy during specific parts of like two games.)
Really it depends on how much you're willing to spend, I'd say it's worth the extra $20 just to get the 770. :)
Also let me know how the 770 works, interested in hearing about it myself!
7970
May I ask why are you upgrading? I have a setup similar to yours (only 8gb RAM and a 580) and I can run every game up to date at max settings @60 fps.
770
Ati drivers are a bitch.
