• How do i force turbo boost/i think my mobile i7 is underperforming

specs: (17" laptop, only 2 months old, temps are 55-60c idle, 60-70 busy, 70-85 heavy) So how would i force/manually activate turbo boost? (i think i can turbo boost to 2.8ghz) Settings i play BC2 on: (Friend let me borrow it, and i'm capped so i can't play multi) Single Player 50-60fps ~ Basically doing nothing or walking 40-50 ~ Walking in place with lots of buildings 20-40 ~ action 10-25 ~ large explosions and shit If i play on native resolution of 1600x900 then its like 40-50 fps nothing, 20-30 action and 5-15 lots of shit going on. To compare, TF2 maxed out 4x AA max res 60fps (vsync) mostly, 40-50fps with lots of shit going on.
VSync, turn it off.
doesn't vsync only cap your fps to your monitor refresh rate though? I'll try it right now. [editline]01:54PM[/editline] It improved my fps by a bit or so, still drops to 20-40 if there is action going on
TurboBoost can only be disabled in the BIOS. If such option doesn't exist, then you cannot disable it. Usually when playing a game, TurboBoost automatically kicks in for most of the time to raise the clock speed to the maximum
Oh, alright. would it be wise to overclock my processor? [editline]02:01PM[/editline] wanna play bc2 with at least a constant 30fps
Oh, alright. would it be wise to overclock my processor?
Good luck trying. Assuming that your laptop's BIOS permits overclocking either within the BIOS or over a low level software (which I doubt), or know the model of the clockgen IC (And is supported by most OC software), you can't push the CPU very far before running into issues such as overheating.
Are you sure it's your processor? Maybe your GPU isn't fast enough.
dammit nooooooooooooooo guess i can only resort to optimization guides. Thanks for the info. I'll now cry in the corner :saddowns:
Turbo boost only works within a certain temperature/wattage threshold IIRC. I'd imagine the extra heat from your graphics card means your processor won't want to overclock itself too hard to maintain reasonable heat/power consumption.
Are you sure it's your processor? Maybe your GPU isn't fast enough.
I've heard that BC2 is CPU straining, so that's why i accused my processor :|
It's your GPU
Are you sure it's your processor? Maybe your GPU isn't fast enough.
This; some games are CPU heavy (like TF2, I can max it out with a GPU from 2005 and a dual-core), I can take BC2 on quite high, without lag. I have a 4870 and a quad-core nowadays.
Those FPS sound average for that GPU. I really doubt the CPU is holding you back that much unless excessive heat is causing it to underclock.
my gpu temps don't show up on speccy or cpuid hardware monitor. again, would it be wise to overclock my gpu?
also set my gpu to performance over quality, boosted fps, lowest was about 15, and that was when that thing in the plane blew up on the last level for single player [editline]02:21PM[/editline]
You're playing BC2 on a laptop, put it on minimum and be happy for it not running at 10FPS
May as well fix 2142 then if i put everything on low.
Disable AA
Disable AA
don't want to turn down the graphics any lower :|
don't want to turn down the graphics any lower :|
Suck it up
no :saddowns:
It's a laptop, why would you even think of overclocking a laptop?
because i can [editline]02:40PM[/editline] if i did i'd probably OC it to 1.8ghz
because i can [editline]02:40PM[/editline] if i did i'd probably OC it to 1.8ghz
Not only will it generate more heat, it won't improve your FPS a bit. You can't get better FPS with those settings with that GPU.
You should try playing BC2 in DirectX 9 instead. C:\Users\<user>\Documents\BFBC2\settings.ini DxVersion=auto to DxVersion=9
because i can [editline]02:40PM[/editline] if i did i'd probably OC it to 1.8ghz
First of all, no you can't, and second, Overclocking a 2.8GHZ CPU to 1.8GHZ Nice. Do you know what exactly does TurboBoost do to adjust your clock speed?
perhaps it is overheating? it's a laptop.. turbo boost only overclocks one core to say, 2.8 GHz. Second, 2.6. 3rd, 2.4, and with all of them, maybe only 1.8. Run some tests and tell me what it goes to [editline]03:20PM[/editline] and yes, i believe you can force turbo boost. I have a tool for that stuff
No, it doesn't overclock at all. In reality, turboboost raises the multiplier of all cores symmetrically, up to x22 iirc. Occasionally, it will change the bus speed, but only by a few megahertz. In another word, The Intel i7 720 is designed to run at 2.8GHz.
OP is 12 and uses his dad's notebook to play gaems
Dude my dad doesn't even know how to burn pictures onto a DVD, let alone know how to choose a decent laptop. He bought a Dell desktop with a shitty 4350. [editline]08:28AM[/editline] and when i was 12 i had a computer with a CRT monitor with 80mb of ram, and the only game i played was Age of Empires. [editline]08:34AM[/editline]
You should try playing BC2 in DirectX 9 instead. C:\Users\<user>\Documents\BFBC2\settings.ini DxVersion=auto to DxVersion=9
How much will that affect visual quality?
Damn kids today, spoiled with their DX10/11 graphics, and yet they bitch when it lags...
I find it pretty funny actually. Only a year ago i was "pfft, who needs dx10?" and "damn this game is laggy, guess i'll play it on low."
You probably won't see any difference in visual quality.
