I'm pretty sure I have a winner here, but what are the chances the extra two cores won't unlock? It's a deal breaker for the friend I'm building this for, and I don't want to disappoint. If it's that important, should I just go for a slower Phenom X4, and if so, are they still able to overclock relatively high? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on it, I don't usually build AMD rigs as of late.
I dont know much about this but I think the motherboard has a big say in whether the cores unlock or not.
I dont think the 555 calisto chips have a very good unlocking rate, AMD kind of caught on at the callisto 550. But the motherboard should unlock, maybe with a BIOS update

Why are you going ddr2?
Sorry if I'm going off track from OP but what exactly is unlocking?
Why are you going ddr2?
...I'm not? Those are low-voltage DDR3 DIMMs. Take a closer look.

Also, Noz: Unlocking is the process by which certain motherboard and CPU combos are capable of "unlocking" cores that had been locked from the manufacturer. It's cheaper for AMD to make 100% quad core chips and lock two (or 1) core than it is to create a new variant on the architecture and have two separate runs of processors. So unlocking is the process by which you regain access to those cores that were supposed to be accessible.

amd locks some of the cores on its quad processors and sells them as dual/tri core processors

Wow read that completely wrong personally though I would just get an athlon x4 and overclock because it is guaranteed and l3 cache doesn't make a huge difference.
$105 is too much for a 4770 in my opinion. There is a Powercolor 1gb 4850 for $109 w/free shipping and it's only $99 if you count the $10 rebate.
So for $4 plus tax more, out of pocket(ie not counting rebate), you get a faster card w/enough memory too allow for more AA. If you DO count the rebate, it's $10 more.
edit: I guess I'm saying I think it's worth the extra $4-$10, depending if you count rebate or not. I go by what I actually have to spend, rebates which come 8-12 weeks later don't count since I still have to spend the full amount first.

This RAM
TBH instead they should just sell quadcores
TBH instead they should just sell quadcores
they do, but they're more expensive.
No i know but instead of locking them just only sell quad cores just not as good ones??
athlon II x4 then, it costs the same as the phenom II x2
Well your motheboard does have EC AOD-ACC Support which is for unlocking but no one knows if it will unlock. It hasn't been done on that motherboard. But since it is new it may not.
It's not motherboard-dependent, it's sb dependent.

SB-710 and SB-750 only
890GX is out, designed for unlocking.
