Kiev (AFP) - Former Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili told a mass rally in Kiev on Tuesday that President Petro Poroshenko needed to quit as activists set out demands for the government to tackle entrenched state graft.
Saakashvili's warning at a demonstration outside parliament in the capital was the culmination of a month of anti-government protests the one-time Poroshenko ally has led across Ukraine since returning to the country last month.
"There can be no fight against corruption while Poroshenko is in power," Saakashvili said.
"It is time for them to hear us," the 49-year-old said to chants of "Shame!" and "Out with the gang!"
The national police department said an anti-riot officer and three demonstrators were hurt in scuffles that involved nearly 5,000 people in the heart of Kiev.
[...]
Poroshenko did not address the corruption allegations on Tuesday and just told reporters: "I view the protests with understanding and respect its participants".
- Three demands -
The protesters issued three major demands for the country's president.
The most crucial involved stripping lawmakers of immunity from prosecution and launching an anti-corruption court that Kiev's lenders at the IMF have labelled a "benchmark" of Ukraine's progress toward Western standards.
A third demand called for changes to the election system that would help independent lawmakers gain seats.
[...]
- Mounting pressure -
Poroshenko appeared to respond to the mounting political pressure by introducing a bill on Tuesday that would eliminate lawmakers' immunity starting in 2020.
But protest organisers dismissed this as a token measure that needlessly delayed the long-promised change.
"In order to start political reforms, we have to have a regime change," university lecturer Taras Tretyak told AFP as protesters sang and chanted around him.
"Unfortunately, Ukraine is in such a state that the issue of conducting reforms is one of the country's very survival," the 37-year-old said.
Lawmakers can currently be charged with a crime only if a majority in parliament votes to remove their legal protection.

Can anybody give the low down on the current state of Ukraine? (non-biased, preferably)
The text on the first picture reads like transliterated "impeachment" - does the word exist in Ukrainian or is that a Trump meme?
that's the direct translation of the word to ukrainian
Can anybody give the low down on the current state of Ukraine? (non-biased, preferably)
you'd need to look for african flagdog.
As for my opinion - post Maidan Ukraine represents Russia back in 90's except a bit worse - instead of "bratva" you have armed nationalist/neo-nazi batalions running around. Power is fractured between oligarchs (Poroshenko being one of them aswell). For every goverment action there are usually two excuses
1) in order restore "ukranian" national culture they massivly censore russian based movies, TV, lliterature and recently passed a law that forbits national minorities from studiing on their native language after three classes.
Propaganda is enmasse aswell and anything even remotelly non ukranian is considered unpatriotic to degree of being considered criminal offence. Also, if you are Russian journalist, expect to be detained unless you write what they want.
2) If someobdy needs to get his hands dirty, whenever it's to forcibly privatize a bank, or assasinate political opponent, or just explain the lack of progress they usually use "Russian FSB" as prime boogeyman for excuse.
A frozen conflict on far east side of country somehow ends up influencing it even to the western borders.
All of that is happening due to silent approval from EU and US, whose media are not soo interested in reports that go against main narrative of Ukraine being miracolously saved into European Future. Only recently, for like, first time somebody in EU spoke out against Ukraine's actions:
PACE Criticizes Ukraine Over New Law On Education
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has expressed concerns over articles in Ukraine’s new education law relating to teaching in minority languages.
In addition, several European Union diplomats told RFE/RL on October 13 that Hungary will bring up the law when EU foreign ministers meet on October 16 in Luxembourg.
Meeting in plenary session in Strasbourg on October 12, the PACE voted for a resolution criticizing the new legislation, saying it "does not appear to strike an appropriate balance between the official language and the languages of national minorities."
"In particular, the new law entails a heavy reduction in the rights previously recognized to 'national minorities' concerning their own language of education," they said.
EU diplomats told RFE/RL that Hungary had threatened to review the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement that entered into force on September 1. Since this can only be done by unanimous agreement of all EU members, Hungary instead said it will bring up the issue at the Luxembourg meeting.
Hungary also included the issue in the Eastern Partnership declaration that EU ambassadors agreed to on October 11 and that leaders plan to issue at the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels on November 24.
Also, three days ago this nice parade, whery reminiscent of the other one in US:
http://www.euronews.com/2017/10/14/thousands-in-nationalist-march-in-ukraine

Hmmm, a march of people with torches who glorify controversial force in war and deny it's war crimes...
wonder where outrage to that?
Soo yeah, Long story short - Maidan has failed because nobody was there to be a good parent for "European" Ukraine.
And if somehow Georgian Tie Eater gets to be next President, it will probably be total collapse. He's even WORSE then Trump, cause Saakashvily is on whole other spectrum of incompetence -

I heard they're only 20 minutes out now but they've got helicopter support this time around.
For real though, I hope this doesnt turn to Ukraine Protest Electric Boogaloo Part 2 because that's the last thing they need right now what with Stalin 2.0 camping out on the east side.

I hope it does enough to force EU to do something about it or the coverage of Ukraine' politics - people gotta care about Ukraine even when it's not about Russia, or they will further encourage it's degradation.
Also, Stalin, really? Just because he's Georgian does not mean he's automaticaly Stalin - he's far from that in both cunning and cruelity.
He's a drunkard and a criminal.

I think he's talking about Putin, not Saakashvili, which is still dumb
It's a shame Ukrainian government turned out to be the same trash except on the other side of the spectrum

It's a bigger shame that they were allowed to stretch soo far into extreme nationalism territory, if anybody in EU really cared about Ukraine rather than seeing it as leverage against Russia, they would encourage goverment to actully uphold standards of living and tolerance they proclaimed in a first place.
But instead Ukraine falls into irrelevancy as soon when hot topic is gone - nobody cares unless you have "russian" or "putin" in news tagline.
Can't wait to Ukraine get fucked even more once again.

What people even think of Poroshenko and Saakashvili where you live?

It's honestly really sad how this all developed out and how little is covered.

Well how much has it actually developed?
