Nintendo files Eternal Darkness trademark suggesting downloadable version

Nintendo has filed a new trademark for Eternal Darkness reserving the rights for a downloadable version of the Gamecube title, according to a listing from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The original, now-dead trademark was filed in April 1999 and lists Eternal Darkness for use with "computer game discs; computer game programs; computer game software; electronic game programs; electronic game software; video game discs; video game programs; video game software." The game, developed by studio Silicon Knights, was published in 2002, and the trademark expired in 2009.
The more recent trademark, filed on July 23, 2013, lists Eternal Darkness for the same uses above, but with two additions: the new trademark mentions "downloadable electronic game programs" and "downloadable electronic game software."
This suggests a downloadable version of the Gamecube original. To date, Nintendo has released no downloadable versions of Gamecube titles for the Wii or Wii U Virtual Consoles in any territory.
In February 2010, Nintendo filed a trademark for Eternal Darkness that lists the name for use with video games and "interactive electronic game programs," but makes no mention of downloadable software. The trademark is still active and Nintendo was granted a fifth extension on ownership as of Dec. 20, 2012.
Nintendo has shared no further information on its plants to port GameCube games to the Virtual Console. Polygon has reached out to Nintendo to inquire about these plans, as well as what may be in store for Eternal Darkness, and will share more details as we have them.
Looks like Eternal Darkness might be the flagship Gamecube game for the Virtual Console.
If this means Eternal Darkness HD, I would buy a Wii U for that.
Interesting; I wonder if the port will be for Wii or Wii U? My guess is Wii U, since Nintendo needs to get good IP out there, and since the usual suspects are still more-or-less indev concerning their games for Wii U (Zelda U is still a mere speck on the horizon), maybe porting Eternal Darkness, a classic survival horror adventure title, is a good idea.
We've yet to see if Shadow of the Eternals will succeed, though it's still at 22% with 25 days to go, so it's early days yet. Also, being that SotE is apparently gonna have a version on the Wii U, that's actually an interesting little ploy on their part; Eternal Darkness being ported would raise awareness of Shadow of the Eternals, whilst Shadow of the Eternals could get more people to know about Eternal Darkness. Likewise, people who want more Eternal Darkness action after the Wii U port would likely want to buy Shadow of the Eternals (unless it falls flat on it's face), and new-school players who try out Shadow of the Eternals might want to know how that all began and buy Eternal Darkness.
Potential for a beneficial symbiotic relationship, assuming Nintendo doesn't do something crazy and Precursor doesn't end up faceplanting. God I hope they don't fuck this up...
Goddamn I loved this game. The bits where you go insane used to scare the shit out of me as a kid

Imagine what they could do with the Gamepad as well if is an HD remake, and not a VC relaese.
If that would mean finally being able to play the game through legal means, then finally
A used copy of it costs like 50 dollars, goddamn
Actually, on that note, why the fuck are bestselling Gamecube games so pricey?
I see Mario Sunshine for no less than 30 dollars
so awesome nintendo had to patent the selling point of the whole game. best gamecube game of all time? certainly a candidate. honestly i'd rather see a sequel rather than a HD remake.

Nintendo games barely lose value over time even once they're out of production. Good SNES games are still pretty expensive to the present day.

Heck, even GBA/Gamecube games can be pretty expensive nowadays. (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Paper Mario: The Throusand Year Door for example, I've seen those sell for RETAIL PRICES)
Which is why I want Gamecube games on the Virtual Console. I would buy a Wii U just for that, and I think Nintendo doesn't understand how much monies this would make
Christ almighty I would buy an Eternal Darkness HD remake in a heartbeat.
