• Random shutdowns

Hello Facepunch. I'm having this problem with my computer. I've had it before, but it seemingly disappeared until now. It's happened twice today. While playing Garry's Mod, my laptop randomly shuts off. It happens when it gets hot. Whenever I have this problem, I put it on my USB cooling mat, and it doesn't happen again. However, it now seems to be shutting off at a much lower temperature. Upon starting it up again, it says that windows didn't shut down correctly. Once when this happened, my keyboard stopped working until I restarted. Computer specs: Dell Studio 1537 Laptop Windows Vista 32 Bit (Home Premium) 4GB RAM (Yes, I know i'm a fucking idiot for getting more than 3 gigs.) Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 ATI Radeon 3450m Now, I know what you're going to say. "It's a video card problem, try updating your drivers." Well, I downloaded the new drivers from the Dell website. I tried to install them. No such fucking luck. Any ideas? [editline]11:24AM[/editline] Gonna try running as administrator, had this problem installing stuff so many times before, can't believe I was stupid enough to forget to. [editline]11:28AM[/editline] Still getting the same problem running as administrator. Fuck. Any ideas? [editline]12:13PM[/editline] What the hell, i had CPUID running in the background. Highest temperature when I was playing gmod was 77 degrees. :suicide:
Whats your graphics chip? [del]Some nVidia mobile chips were prone to overheating and failing.[/del] Nevermind I just saw the Catalyst installer screenshot! :downs: Check all your fans are clear of dust and get a hoover on them to suck the crap out.

One of my friends had that problem. Anyway, I'm guessing it's reaching 80 degrees, and auto shuts off. There's a large chance there's a lot of dust in there, but i'm not really experienced enough to open up my laptop and start messing around. Even if it is just hoovering dust out. Still, i've got the driver problem. Can you help?
Dell most likely doesn't have the newest drivers so there could easily be problems. Download it from the ATi driver page instead (but do take a snapshot first)
Okay, got the drivers installed. One of the DLLs was having a conflict with Visual Studio. Downloaded the hotfix, installed, done. I'll test it tonight, see if the heat is any less. (I'm guessing it will be slightly, the new drivers should run it more efficiently.) Still, i'll contact Dell. It's out of warranty though.
It has to be either Overheating, Could be a virus.
Get hwmonitor and keep it running to tell you the max temperature.
Get hwmonitor and keep it running to tell you the max temperature.
Already have. It's gone up to 77 degrees before, but I believe it's reaching 80 and automatically shutting off. (I read that 80 is considered dangerous.) Also, I love how I come into the technical support forum, and get dumbs for requesting support. Being 12, I'm not as computer literate as all of you, which is why I've come here for assistance.
You have to manually install the Catalyst Control Center + drivers via command prompt. Linkage: http://green-devils.co.uk/tut_cmd_ati1.php

Look at one of the above posts. I've got it installed. Anyway, will Dell help even though it's out of warranty?
UPDATE Today, I was playing Garry's Mod. I was surprised at how cool my laptop was staying. After a while, it randomly shut down. It didn't feel that hot when it'd shut down. Now, usually when it shuts down I get the Windows Error Recovery screen when I start up again. Two times before, this makes the third, the keyboard doesn't work. Num Lock is on, but I can't turn it on or off. Same for caps and scroll. None of the keys do anything. On the error recovery screen, there's a countdown until it selects the currently selected option. (I'm guessing this is because it detects the keyboard isn't working, but I don't know.) Anyway, if I shut down and leave it, the keyboard works when I start up again. However, if I start it up too soon after the incident (have to wait 3-4 minutes) I still get the keyboard problem. I've had this problem with the keyboard on previous random shutdowns, but this one, the laptop didn't seem that hot. Checking HWMonitor Pro, I saw the temperatures were fairly normal. Although they would have had time to cool down, the laptop felt more or less the same heat. So, can anyone help?
