Gamestop: "We'd Love to See Xbox 360/PS3 Price Cuts"
68 replies, posted
Video game retailer GameStop would love to see price cuts for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, president Tony Bartel said during a recent post-earnings call with analysts and media. An analyst suggested price drops for those platforms are long overdue, and Bartel seemed to agree. "We think it would be excellent and definitely would increase the sell-through rate on the old-generation consoles," he said. "We definitely think that would help."
"Year to date in the US, Xbox 360 and PS3 software and hardware are down 57.8 percent on a dollar basis," he said. "That's clearly significantly more than we anticipated at the beginning of the year."
I'd love to see gamestop go out of business.
I pretty much agree with him, even though I own an Xbone, I still prefer to play my 360, due to a wider variety of games.

why does everyone hate gamestop (EBgames in canada) anyway?
I use them for 3ds/wiiu games and i've never had an issue, prices are decently competitive too.

Because I spent 2 hours gathering old consoles/games/controllers in my house today, drove over there, and was told I have to be 18+ to trade in items for cash.
what????

I'm sure they only gave you $10 for all of it too.

The exchange rates are fucking ridiculous. Over at my local CEX, I recently attempted to exchange Advanced Warfare on Xbone for cash, only to be offered something crappy like £15. Next time, I think I'll just swap for in-store games.

Thats because its technically a pawn shop, and you have to be 18 to pawn your possessions. Thats law, not store policy.
"Hello, how can I help you?"
Yes, I want that new pokemon game.
"Okay come right over here."
"Haha maybe you should buy them both haha (joking except not really)"
Nah, I'll just stick with Ruby
"Can I interest you in a guide book? You get a discount if you buy it now!"
No, thank you
"Okay, how about we renew your pro membership?"
Nope, I'm good.
"Okay, and would you like an extended warrenty on x?"
jesus fucking christ i just want my game
The employee that gets you to buy more gets bonuses most likely, it's not like this is a GameStop issue, most places are like this.

Most retail chains are like this, though.

thank you for shopping at literally any retail establishment ever. you are not inconvenienced by a couple extra offers before you walk out of the store
^ I remember an employee literally refused to checkout my game until I filled out the pro membership form. Every time I tried asking "hey dude can I just get my game and go" he was like "BUT WHY WOULDN'T YOU WANT THESE AMAZING DEALS!?"
Took me like fifteen minutes to get it through his thick skull that I had no interest in membership. Christ.

That's a fine moment of the person being the issue, not the policy. If you had brought it up to his manager, he'd be getting one hell of a talking to. As much as places like to sell their extra goodies, they prefer to make sure that customers want to come back even more.
I stopped going there once they pushed that credit card shit. Rather shop online now, because I don't have to deal with these annoying things.
Also, I am convinced that their phone support lines are always open, but they insist on making you wait 15 minutes because of their endless plugs and advertisements.
I also don't see the point in buying any new games there anyway since you can just download all of the new games straight to the system on the current gen consoles.

At my current workplace (Staples, if you're curious) we ALWAYS have to ask people if they want some extended warranty, if they have a loyalty card, and (currently) if they want 3 for 2 on sellotape. It's annoying as fuck for me and for the customer. The problem is, my manager is annoying. As soon as he notices I haven't said "do u have a loyalty card" he shits all over me.

I don't know why people are surprised by this. You do it for convience, not value. Its this way for every single pawn shop, car dealership, jewler, etc on earth. Anywhere you trade in something the out of pocket gain you get from doing it will always be way below market value, because you are selling to a third party who needs to make profit for resale.
If you want value, sell it yourself on ebay/amazon. Just like if you want value you sell your used car on craigslist instead of trading it in. The only reason you should go to gamestop is if you can't be bothered doing that, or have so much junk to hawk off that it would be a serious time/shipping/etc inconvenience to sell it all yourself.

what credit card shit?

My local CEX plays obnoxiously loud heavy metal and death metal music so I stopped going there because waiting in a cue for about an hour because they have one poor dude on the tills too.

They push used games (which they get 100% of the profits from and the devs 0%) over new.
Also they have a history of doing shady things.
The first time I went to Gamestop not too long ago, I just bought my Steam Card, Fifa 15 and got the hell out of there. No big deal
what credit card shit?
They are doing a reward credit card thingy now like your gas station or Best Buy or w/e. Has high interest rates but most store-based credit cards do. I assume it's being pushed like their rewards card.
They push used games (which they get 100% of the profits from and the devs 0%) over new.

Would you rather have devs get a cut too and see the price go up a lot? I don't see why buying anything used should have profits go to the devs. If you want to support them, buy new.

Not everywhere has internet speeds that have caught up with devs deciding that compressed data is outdated and having their game be twice as big as WoW and 5 expansions is reasonable for a linear single player game.
I went to EB Games this one time. I brought like seven games with me to trade in, since I thought, "Hey, how bad can it be?"
They offered me a grand total of $1.75. For seven games. Yeah.
They push used games (which they get 100% of the profits from and the devs 0%) over new.
So?
We could change "game" to "vehicle" and you'd have a completely different standard. How would you like to have to fork over some percentage of selling your used car, truck, motorcycle to the factory where it was built when you sold it? Of course you wouldn't, it's idiotic.
Of course they'd rather push used games than new games, they make way more money off of it. They make literally nothing on new game sales because the margins are so razor thin. It's the same reason movie theaters charge out the ass for concessions. Tickets may be $15 a person, but 90% of that goes back to hollywood.

Best thing you can do in this case is just tell them right at the register "I don't want to sound rude, but I know you're required to tell me all this spiel, so I'm going to save us both a lot of time and tell you right now that I'm not interested".
Best thing you can do in this case is just tell them right at the register "I don't want to sound rude, but I know you're required to tell me all this spiel, so I'm going to save us both a lot of time and tell you right now that I'm not interested".
Just say "Nope, just interested in getting the game." after the first question and they won't bug you. I've never had a GameStop employee be a persistent asshole to me after doing that.

How long ago was this? If you actually fill out the survey they give you (or should give you) and fill it out with what happened, GameStop takes them seriously and the employee would get reprimanded for it.

usually when i go in to EBGames (its just gamestop in canada same company) nd ask for a game it goes like this:
"I want game X"
"Alright sure! *go gets the game* is that everything?"
"yeah"
"Got a edgecard?"
"yeah"
"want a waranty?"
"no"
sometimes with some smalltalk interlaced if they played/want the game. like literally any other retail store ever.

Yeah I don't get how this is a standard according to all the agrees. I've never had that many questions after taking it to the checkout.
