Sen. Mark Kirk, a moderate Republican from Illinois, released a video on Thursday in support of legislation that would make it illegal to track and log the location of individual Americans without their consent.
“Each American’s privacy is protected by the Fourth Amendment against unreasonable searches and seizures,” he said. “Two hundred years ago, our Founding Fathers made America one of the first places where the government needed an independent judge’s warrant before searching your home.
“While you’re 18th century rights are protected, your privacy in the 21st century is in danger. Congress should updated the law to make sure your digital privacy is protected too.”
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) introduced the Geolocation Privacy and Surveillance (GPS) Act in June.
The legislation would make it a crime for commercial entities to disclose digital location data from cell phones and other devices. It would also require a warrant for the government to obtain that information.
“Telecom firms collect the details of your life in countless ways,” Kirk continued. “Cell phone locations, GPS, apps and more. While the government has to get a warrant to secretly record your phone call, you have no such privacy when they track your location, where you called, or who you’ve been with.”
all republicans aren't idiots; the good ones are just stifled by the bad ones threatening to cut them out if they don't play with the big boys.

The good ones seem to be a lot more quiet in comparison to the bad ones, who are mainly loud-mouthed idiots.

Isn't that quite normal in this society?
It should be illegal to speak up if you're a complete idiot..
This sounds good to me.
Not gonna bother listing the two dozen reasons why it will never pass.
Sen. Mark Kirk, a moderate...
Now that's a word you don't see in politics often.
That aside, he sounds really reasonable and rational. As naive and optimistically as it would be to believe, I hope the bill passes.

Now if only the government could really work like this.
The reason you never hear moderates speak up is because both parties force you to go completely on board with party lines. Why do you think they have all the party whips in congress?
I (and many other Illinois citizens) remember sending an email to Mark Kirk about digital privacy. It's good to see that he spoke up about the topic.
A reasonable republican? What is this madness?!?
He's actually closer to being an actual fucking Republican, who advocates a smaller government, than 99% of the rest of his party.
Good for him, I say.
Rep. Mark Kirk of Highland Park made what he admitted were “politically uncomfortable” remarks Saturday when asked about the difficulties of the visa process for immigrants entering the United States.
“I’m OK with discrimination against young Arab males from terrorist-producing states. I’m OK with that,” Kirk said. “I think that when we look at the threat that’s out there, young men between, say, the ages of 18 and 25 from a couple of countries, I believe a certain amount of intense scrutiny should be placed on them.
