Only 2 Million? I expected more to be honest.
I tried this thinking it was gonna be boring, but DAMN the storytellling is compelling, the characters are realistic to a degree and the combat is intense survival.

It just didn't feel right, nothing was fleshed out right, the characters were so dull, replaceable and badly written. I questioned their motives and reactions every time. Stuff that happened at one point was absolutely unimportant later in the story. The atmosphere was ruined by slow motion effects announcing enemies or hinting that you've killed the last baddie. Alan Wake as character was just not beliveable to be a wrtiter at all. His choose of words during the story were basic at it's best... for a god damn writer. Where are you right now? How does it smell, Alan? Are you scared? How does the grip of your pistol feel? Is it hard to hold it because you're sweating? Nothing of that... just a bland: "I've reached the old mill" Why didn't they added the manuscript seamlessly into the gameplay? The ending was awesome, lots happened, lots of room for interpretation, making theories about what happened and who the characters are. But everything in between felt so... bad and rushed. I was incredible dissapointed with Alan Wake, sadly. Remedy really let me down with this one. Wanna see a better written "Twin Peaks" tribute with more interresting and beliveable written characters? Go for Deadly Premonition.

The single most retarded thing Alan Wake does that brought it down for me is the fucking slow mo close up every single fucking time enemies spawn. This happens for like 10 hours, it broke all tension of being a horror game which it really could have been, but that shit ruined it. The game was really good though aside from that.
Well it's a good thing my standards aren't so goddamn high, then.
Not saying that it was a bad game. The gameplay was fun, the graphics were nice but there was too much ruined the experience as a whole for me. Remedy could have done A LOT MORE and we all know that... parts of the game prove that (like the manuscript pages). It seems like they were just too scared to go deeper into the material.
I honestly believe this needs to go SteamPlay to cement itself now. Seems to be the way to go to release games that hit cult status, and almost guarantee they'll sell on the PC platform.
i liked alan wake a lot aside from its laughably primitive lipsync for all the characters. great looking game, good dialogue, nice music, but the mouths dont fit any of the words
Huh, neat going for Remedy; hopefully they can use the money to help fund an "Alan Wake 2", hopefully with a stronger Twin Peaks vibe. Shit I just had an epiphany; what if Remedy and the remnants of Team Bondi joined forces to make an Alan Wake game with a strong emphasis on investigation and surreal Twin Peaks-esque horror? THAT would certainly be kind of a neat game, especially if there wasn't as much survival horror combat, since even with the narratively-paced daytime sequences, the nighttime sequences seemed very combat-oriented. I'll say this much; even though using light to weaken your enemies is an interesting concept, I don't think having to focus your flashlight on the enemy for a coupla seconds was the best design choice. It woulda worked in a game like Silent Hill, where the combat was clunky yet avoidable, but in Alan Wake you couldn't simply run away because the enemies would hunt you down relentlessly. Also the fact that most of the enemies were possessed people didn't do the enemy variety any real favours, even though there were also possessed objects like possessed tyre wheels and barrels. Personally I woulda loved to have seen more possessed animals; sure we had the birds but that was about it for possessed wildlife, whereas we coulda had possessed bears, possessed mountain lions (they have those things around Washington state, don't they?), or even possessed DEER, which was a real big missed opportunity since Bright Falls was really big on deer and the Deerfest was just around the corner in the story. Still, if Remedy makes another Alan Wake styled game with better combat (by that I mean the combat could be clunky and unreliable but still avoidable and escapable, giving more of a survival horror feel) and an even stronger sense of unearthly surreality that makes it a lot like Twin Peaks, that'd be a good game.
Great game, but the face animations were hilarious :v:
possessed DEER

Imagine Alan facing THOSE things in the forest; more surreal enemies with strange appearances and unnatural erratic movements would serve for more subtle unsettlement as opposed to the standard Western "BOO ITS A NECROMORPH OH GOD". Being startled is different from being unsettled and disturbed.

I believe they were meant to build you up for the upcoming fight, and most fights in Alan Wake WERE intense because of the light mechanic. You couldn't pop off 10 headshots in a row and move on which was what gave it the survival horror elements. I can only remember one point in the game where you could go apeshit with supplies (It was a damn good point though!)
I loved that game. It was a little flawed, but the world it created felt much more real than most other games I'd played. Remedy has a great gift when it comes to level design, especially dream sequences. The way the town shifted and fragmented during the last two chapters was insane. I liked the characters too. Alan felt like kind of an asshole, in a believable way. I think if they combine the quickly moving story of Alan Wake with the improved combat in American Nightmare, the next game could be even better. Also this. I love this game so much! really immersed me. I really like the setting of it and i've been searching for more games / movies / series with similar feel / setting! hoping on a sequel.
this game poops on my computer i am happy, i hope there are more alan wake titles to come
Fuck this article made me want to play this again. COME AT ME SHADOW BROS [editline]30th April 2013[/editline]
<vid>
God damned this sequence is great.
I absolutely loved Alan Wake, I can't wait for the sequel and greatly hope that Remedy doesn't make it an Xbox exclusive this time.
My main complaint about the combat is that it got REALLY samey after a while, didn't stop me from completing it though. One thing alan wake did AMAZINGLY well is the environmental design, it's fucking superb and the game looks absolutely beautiful for it. Definitely a way better twin peaks inspired game than, uh, deadly premonition.
Needed more athmospheric / tense as hell walking around + exploring, less tedious repetitive combat. Fantastic game overall.
Alan Wake has arguably my favorite story in any game ever, it's just so -believable- an Alan Wake 2 would make me scream like a little girl [editline]30th April 2013[/editline]
Definitely a way better twin peaks inspired game than, uh, deadly premonition.
YOOOOOOOO DONT TALK SHIT ABOUT THAT DP
Oh man. This is seriously awesome. I absolutely fucking loved AW. Definitely one of the best games I've ever played. The story and the soundtrack really stand out. The only thing that really gets tedious is the combat though. Shine flashlight for a bit, then fire a couple of bullets. ugh.
i remember getting the heavy duty lantern at the Old Gods of Asgard scene oh man that was when i knew i was playing a little slice of heaven
I hope they keep the weapons system from American Nightmare and add more variety. That'd be awesome.
i remember getting the heavy duty lantern at the Old Gods of Asgard scene oh man that was when i knew i was playing a little slice of heaven
it's a special kind of game when you get pumped at the sight of a fully upgraded torch! aw man it had so many cool ideas though man
I know, but it's so bad. Hilariously so, though. I really ought to pick it up at some point.
