Hi everyone.
I would consider myself pretty good when it comes to computers, but right now I feel like a fucking idiot.
Here's the story:
I was bored as always, so I decided to browse facepunch. I saw the OC megathread or whatever it was called, and I went to my BIOS to see if I could overclock my core 2 quad (Whick is actually a bad idea, when I think about it).
So I looked in the bios and couldn't find anything (I guess that's what you can expect from an Intel motherboard), but then i saw that i could change the clock setting on my ram. I have tried doing the same thing on an older and shittier computer which could not handle it, but I just took the CMOS battery out of the computer for five minutes, and then it worked again.
So I just went ahead and tried overclocking my ram. When it asked to "Save and exit BIOS?" I said yes and as soon as i hit enter, the computer shut off. Then it turned on again. 1 second later it shut off again and it just did the same thing again and again. So i opened 'er up, and took the CMOS battery out. Five minutes later i put it in again, but it didn't help.
I looked all around the motherboard too see if there was any "RESET" jumper switch, as i've seen on some motherboards. I couldn't find any.
So I thought: "Maybe this motherboard has a capacitor of some sort that keeps the BIOS settings in a period of time in case the CMOS battery dies"
So I watched some tv (Which is a very rare thing for me to do, lol). 30mins later it still did not boot.
I tried booting with only one stick of ram, switching positions of the ram etc. but nothing has worked.
So, did I fry my ram? Or my motherboard?
I don't think i fried my motherboard 'cause if I take all the ram out of the machine, it gives me a valid beep code (No ram found, ofc), and the computer does not shut off by itself anymore.
Tl;dr I tried to stupidly overclock my ram via BIOS, and from that point my computer would not boot. Even when I had removed the CMOS battery.
Im that kind of guy that technically lives inside his computer (Except weekends), so i'm pretty :smithicide: right now.
I feel so dumb right now, rate me boxes!

Oh fuck, I forgot to include the motherboard info.
It's an Intel DG41TY with a socket 775 and it uses DDR II ram with either 667Mhz or 800Mhz. I currently have 2x1GB 667Mhz ram
Please include a tl;dr
There ya go
-snip- didn't read
I did.
Your computer wont even go into the BIOS?
Nope. Basically the only it can do in current state is turn on for one second, and then turn off again. Then it does that in a loop. :smith:
When your computer starts, it checks the CMOS chip for information so that the BIOS knows what it has to work with. Since you removed the CMOS battery, my guess is you probably reset your CMOS chip or something.
Here is some info http://www.howstuffworks.com/bios.htm/printable
The BIOS uses CMOS technology to save any changes made to the computer's settings. With this technology, a small lithium or Ni-Cad battery can supply enough power to keep the data for years. In fact, some of the newer chips have a 10-year, tiny lithium battery built right into the CMOS chip!
Never take out a CMOS battery
Wow, never knew that a cmos chip could have battery build into it!
Remove the jumper from the default position (typically connecting the 1st and 2nd pins).
Replace the jumper to connect the 2nd and 3rd pins.
I also just found a jumper on the mobo which connected to 1-2 out of 3 pins! :buddy:
BRB

The jumper sits next to a print reading "BIOS CONFIG" btw
:downs:
that is probably your BIOS control. Remove the jumper then boot up. If you put it onto the other 2 pins, it will most likely go into config mode. Either will probably work though.
It did not work :saddowns:
I also have to go to bed now. Fucking school!
Any suggestions? I will try leaving the jumper on the reset position all night...Without the battery, just to make sure

I did not see Gunfighters post when i wrote the above
Leave the battery in at all times
Hmm. Should I leave the Jumper completely off or have it in the other position...Since it says "Bios config" I am belive it means what Gunfighter said...n
You shouldn't need to do anything overnight. Put the jumper on pins 2 & 3 then power on the computer. Leave it on for 2 minutes. Turn the computer off and then put the jumper back on pins 1 & 2. Start up PC and you will probably be met with a configuration screen. If so, just go with all defaults if you can.
Or did this not work?
As i said, the computer just cold reboots ever 2 seconds, so leaving it on for 2 minute is probably not good for my harddrive...
[editline]10:24PM[/editline]
And it probably wont work either

Ok, right now im in bed and i took the jumper completely off, as I thought that would make sence. Battery's in, though

I will report back to you guys as soon as possible...
Thanks for the help :downs: Goodnight!
GOOD NEWS!
I came home and he computer still did not boot. I tried setting the jumper to position 2 and it booted into some sort of debug mode. I set the ram clock back again and it told me to put the jumper back and so I did and guess what? IT WORKS!!!
:woop:
Thank you much!
I wish I could give you a gift or something....THANKS!
