• A non virus filled/retarded AVI to iPod compatible format converter?
    29 replies, posted
Basically, every video file on my computer is in .avi format. I want to put these on my iPod Touch so I can watch them on the go. However I can't seem to find any trustworthy looking conversion software on the net, so I would like to hear Facepunches suggestions. Needs to be able to handle a large number of files at once (Queue etc, so I can leave it to convert overnight or whatever) and is in a format that works on an iPod touch.
SUPER. It's website is sorta retarded, you have to jump through a million hoops to download it, but it's awesome.
Wow that is laughably arbitrary and ridiculous to download. The fact they actually have a page explaining how to get to the download really shows how insane it is. However the program does look rather good, and I'm hoping it is better designed than the website, thanks for the recommendation.

You could also try out Handbrake. Link: http://handbrake.fr/
Dosen't iTunes do that anyway?
If it's jailbroken, you should be able to find VLC on Installous or Cydia. I can't confirm this, though.
If I ever needed to convert anything I used format factory (www.formatoz.com). Yes, it has some advertisment e-bay shit, but it works.

Media Coder is my converter of choice: no ads; easy download; and converts anything into pretty much anything.
You could also try out Handbrake. Link: http://handbrake.fr/
This or SUPER are your best options. I've been using both for years and they haven't let me down. Well except about a year ago, when SUPER buggered up on my laptop and wouldn't convert a single video properly and reinstalling didn't fix it.
I use DVDVideosoft, it's got an okay GUI and it converts videos fine. http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/
Why does everyone use third party apps, when iTunes can convert videos to an iPod version?
Why does everyone use third party apps, when iTunes can convert videos to an iPod version?
You probably have literally zero control over the file size and quality. And its probably slow as shit. Handbrake can convert an entire 2 hour long movie down to 480 x 320 in about 10-15 minutes on my PC. And all I have is a Athlon II X4, nothing fancy. Plus, you have to use iTunes. That does no good if you use 3rd party programs to sync your iDevice.
MediaCoder, best one there is.
WinFF has a lot of useful presets.
Handbrake is your best choice. I've used SUPER but the quality always ends up crap in comparison.

Converting even the smallest of movies takes like 3 or 4 hours at best in XP. About the same in Linux with Handbrake.

Doesn't iTunes have a build in video converter?
Doesn't iTunes have a build in video converter?
That's what I was sayin... It's built-in. Unless it's some 2GB ipod, there's no need to worry about file size.

Some people just don't want to use iTunes v:v:v

If you have a ati graphics card there is a converter in catalyst.
If you have a ati graphics card there is a converter in catalyst.
The quality is shit. :/ [editline]25th February 2011[/editline]
Except if you don't want to sync, or you can't get on the computer that you last synced it with (thus, the next computer will delete all your stuff), or you're jailbroken.
Will they ever fix this glitch?
Doesn't iTunes have a build in video converter?
That's what I said!
