The Army is moving ahead smartly with its XM25 shoulder fired, semi-automatic 25mm grenade launcher with plans to spend $34 million on further development in 2011 and a production start slated for 2012, according to service budget documents. The Army plans to buy at least 12,500 of the weapons beginning in 2012, enough to put one in each infantry squad and special forces team, according to PEO Soldier.
The futuristic looking XM25 fires a “smart” High Explosive Airburst round out to around 600 meters. The smart round is a “counter defilade” round, designed to blast enemy infantry taking cover behind walls, cars, in trenches as well as enemy fighters dumb enough to be standing out in the open. The Army calls the weapon a “leap ahead” technology.
The XM25 uses a laser rangefinder to target the enemy, then the weapon’s micro-computer accounts for air pressure, temperature and the 25mm round’s ballistics, feeds that information to a microchip in the round itself programming it to detonate directly over the target. With a 600 meter effective range, it would provide small teams greatly enhanced lethality well beyond that of rifles and machine guns. The Army claims that tests showed the XM25 with the high-explosive round is 300 percent more lethal than current squad level weapons.
http://kitup.military.com/2010/02/army-spends-big-on-smart-high-explosive-weapon.html?ESRC=army.nl

Fuck shit up: real life edition
Nice
The US has things that shoots satellites out of the sky.
Why not one of these?
So fun! Can't wait for Army surplus!
Now all we need is one for every soldier, and heavily armored leg padding so people can rocket jump.
I thought that this project was cancelled because it was too fucking heavy and impractical
We're finally adopting the (X)M25? FUCK YEAH!
This will never catch on.
I thought that this project was cancelled because it was too fucking heavy and impractical
That was the OICW. This is basically the OICW without the assault rifle attached to it.
Surprisingly, this does have many applications for urban warfare, and may not actually be a complete waste of money. Its excellent for taking out snipers or enemy personnel in windows and rooms, common in urban combat.
So, If I read that right... we can kill each terrorist 3 times over?
Sounds overpowered.
:hawaaaafap:
Yea we totally need a grenade launcher rifle against unarmored terrorists.
Sounds like the military has learned much from the MW2 Community
Where's the love for Milkor MGL? :saddowns:
I assume it'd probably be a lot cheaper in quantity.

Noobs.

Dude, it's for vehicles and shit, too.

As if an Mk19 isn't already capable of completely obliterating anything that stands in it's path.

The M203 is more practical, and 40mm rounds dont airburst (At least the common HEDP rounds dont). But when you feel the need to carpet bomb the entire fucking block with 40mm rain, then the Milkor is the way to go.
Its also fucking sweet looking.
As if an Mk19 isn't already capable of completely obliterating anything that stands in it's path.
Because you can carry a Mk. 19 around with you all the time.
Where the fuck are the exoskeletons and battle droids? I mean come on, it's twenty-friggin-ten.

They're still working on the Exosuits, but we DO have bomb droids. Sorta.
It is a soldier's job to have every possible advantage over the enemy.

We kinda do have exosuits.

The XM25 could prove enormously useful to troops in Afghanistan battling Taliban insurgents that typically fire from the cover of tree lines and from behind mud walls.
OP apparently didn't read his own article...
Because you can carry a Mk. 19 around with you all the time.
You didn't read your own post. You said for vehicles.
What'd make more sense for budget would be an MGL for infantry, and keep the current MK19s for vehicles.
Unless you are referring to it being used against vehicles, in which case any 40mm grenade launcher could do the same job.
You didn't read your own post. Yous aid for vehicles:

No, I meant AGAINST vehicles.

USA: "I have 18 pounds of SAPI plates, air support, and a semi-automatic, shoulder fired, 25mm airburst grenade launcher!"
Insurgent: "I, uhhh, have this AK-47 and an extra magazine"
USA: :smug:
This thing would really piss people off when coupled with Danger Close
Where the fuck are the exoskeletons and battle droids? I mean come on, it's twenty-friggin-ten.
We already have the legs and autotargeting guns, it's just a matter of supergluing them on top of each other.
They kinda have exoskeletons.

The U.S. army is Noob. Stop using Predator Missile Spam and Endless UAV Hacks losers and Noobtubes.

How is airburst going to be more effective against vehicles than a direct hit...?
