Why is it that I have to register a domain with a company?
So let's say I was looking to get a domain of www.flowerscook.com. I go to two diffrent websites, godaddy and register.com. Register.com says the price is 35 dollars for 1 year, and go daddy is at 15 dollars. The price isn't important, but this tells me that no one owns the domain name. So if no one owns the domain name why should I have to pay $15 for one year to a company that doesn't own the domain?
If I am correct than what I should be able to do is set up a web server and put it up with a .com
domain for free. If no one owns www.flowerscook.com then why should I have to pay for it? If I had a server I should be able to forward my ports to my router and allow it to use a DNS to connect to the webserver.
Honestly does YouTube have to pay 10 dollars a year for the use of the domain,
So is there anyone out in facepunch that can answer
why do I have to pay for a domain name that no one owns?
That's just how it works, if they aren't owned they are for anybody, and that's how domain providers make money.
Nobody owns domains until they are bought. This includes the web hosting services.
No! You cant have domains for free
Godaddy & other providers pay the NIC service (in this case i think its ICANN) so they don't keep all of your money..
They are like the middle man! (They take care of the payment, DNS servers etc)

"Honestly does YouTube have to pay 10 dollars a year for the use of the domain, " - Yes they do
"So is there anyone out in facepunch that can answer
why do I have to pay for a domain name that no one owns?" Its owned by the NIC in this case ICANN.
There are different TLD providers, here in denmark we have DK-Hostmaster, its a organisation that maintains the TLD, but you can't buy domains from them directly unless you are registered as a service provider
does ICANN pay for their domain?
I don't think so as they are the administrators of it they would have to pay themselves
It's also to prevent idiots registering everything they can.
Yup... Doesnt stop domain "pirating" though.. Getting a domain name that makes sense is harder than getting to lick the US president in the balls...
