My laptop shuts down by its self at random and sometimes takes multiple times to actually start up. I have no idea whats wrong but I don't think it's overheating as I have it sitting on a cooler. The fan doesn't seem to be spinning much though and the temp sits around 50 most of the time.
It isn't a windows style shut down, its like the one you get when you hold down the power button.
Check it isn't filled with dust
Nah it's pretty much completely free of dust.
Yes I have checked, I'd looked just a few minutes before I posted the thread.
"At random" also meaning while running? If not, it could be going into hibernation. Either way check the control panel if it's set to hibernate at any point and set it to Stand By (because that's generally less broken).
It's set to never hibernate.

The fan seems to have decided to work now completely out of the blue.
Nothing guys?
Try taking the battery out and see if the computer still shuts down.....
My old ass compaq does that; when it's on just batterry. One of the cells is fucked up methinks
Well I've been using it plugged in the whole time this has been happening, could the battery still be interfering and should I unplug it and use it for a while on mains only to see if it still happens?

Try it...
Worth a shot. Try using a Ubuntu Live CD and see if it's related to your OS (or something installed in Windows)
Perhaps a driver is messing up and causing a full system halt, forcing the entire system to do a hard reset?
Well the no battery thing seems to be working so far but I'll leave it running till I get home after work tomorrow and see if it shut down. Then I'll try to find my liveCD
Does it shut down when you are running it on battery?
Yes.
Well it managed the whole day without the battery then as soon as I picked it up and put it on my lap it started all over again so I put the battery in again so that it could actually start up.
A dead-ish battery and your power cord or plug on your laptop is broken.

Sounds like something inside is loose. Maybe you should take a look in it. Specially around the battery.
I can't see anything loose and the charger is fine so I don't know whats wrong.
I actually think that was my problem with my Compaq. I had a hell of a time trying to open the casing though and gave up.
I've tried it with mains only, battery only and both and it happened all three times.
Also I tried opening the casing but only got far enough to peek at the socket and I couldn't see anything wrong.
