• First review of the GTX580 - $500, quieter than a GTX280
Enter the GeForce GTX 580. If two weeks ago somebody told us that today NVIDIA would be hard-launching a new high-end graphics processor under a new product family (the GeForce GTX 500 series), we'd have laughed out loud. We were too busy looking in AMD's direction for its new high-end GPU in the works, which is still nowhere in the horizon. It's that freaky moment in which you're slowly treading your way in a fairly linear horror FPS game, and turn around to find a monster breathing down on you. If the fact that NVIDIA was working on releasing a new high-end successor to the Fermi based GTX 480 today wasn't surprise enough, the fact the GeForce GTX 580 is claimed by NVIDIA to be the "best" GPU, and not just the fastest, certainly is. The GeForce GTX 480 gave us more than satisfactory performance, but was a bit of a let down on the thermals, and power consumption fronts. The claim that NVIDIA made the GeForce GTX 580 to outperform the GTX 480 and have better thermals and lower power draw certainly raises some eyebrows, because NVIDIA is building the GF110 GPU on a TSMC 40 nm process, just like the existing GF100 "Fermi".
Source. If I can cash in the warranty on my 480's and get a full refund I'll definitely be replacing them with these.
And I just got a GTX 460 :saddowns: Why do new series of cards always come out just as I buy one. Oh well, the 460 is fitting my needs fine really. I wouldn't have the money for the new cards.
I'm still surviving on an ATI Radeon 2400 Pro, I can never bring myself to buy a new one because I always think "If I just wait a bit longer, the price will go down and I'll be able to get something better with my money"

BRB, selling my GTX480
Drivers always improve it so give it time
I'm still somewhat in shell shock, this thing came out of nowhere. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] Problem, ATI?
where are the temperatures [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] wow why would they put that there
where are the temperatures
Hmm... Yeah, I don't see anything about temps... Well, by tomorrow I'm sure there'll be at least a dozen reviews out so just give it time I guess. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] Shit ATI, get it together. And I'm still using a 9600GT :saddowns:
Your passive aggressive trolling needs work; call me underwhelmed but the SRP +$150 for 12% median gain isn't particularly awesome. XF scaling has been fixed, so that advantage is gone too. Maybe the sammich card will actually be impressive.

Wow this is bullshit I got my 470 a month ago.
The GTX 580 should have been what the GTX480 originally is [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] Bye bye Fermi jokes
I don't regret my GTX 460 because I wouldn't be able to afford an 500$ graphic card anyway. But still, this is a very good card. Can't wait to see others versions of this component [editline]9th November 2010[/editline] Temps and fan noise had been improved a lot
The price looks to be pretty great. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] (Can't wait to see a quad-SLI build with those)

Really want to see some SLI benches. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] Prices may drop as christmas gets closer and ATI releases the 6*** series so smart move would be to wait a little while before jumping on these. Save some cash and by then the drivers will've matured.
Im still using a geforce fx 5200 pci :smug:
Well, I'm still using a GeForce 2 MX. Top that.
cool
Wild guess here, Nvidia fanboy?
Numbers don't lie.
Well, I'm still using a GeForce 2 MX. Top that.
ATI Rage IIc or Rage Pro, can't tell. 2 or 6 mb. :smug:
Seems to be a 10%-15% improvement over the 480 on high resolutions. That's pretty much what I expected. Still, I honestly think it should have been called the 485, or the 490, because it's not entirely different, just moderately more efficient with the new core. I believe, according to few sources and some rumors, that they stripped some of the HPC part out of the chip that's used for Tesla cards, so it must have cut out a good amount of transistors and allowed the card to a bit less power ontop of that as well. Speaking of power consumption, it's good, it uses less power than a 480, which again, was expected. The review IMO is a bit poor though, testing in 1024 and 1280 is pretty bad, I don't know why they do this, but they still do. There's an SLI 580 review as well, but it doesn't test other SLI'd or Crossfired cards. While it's improved, I won't jump on this right away, with Cayman right around the doorstep. Supposedly rumors point to the same percentage improvements over the 480, so next month could be a real battle. Also, since the 580 is a paper launch, availability won't be ready until at least mid-december or possibly into the new year.

Do I win?(I'm pretty sure I do against the first, no idea about the second.) Sadly, it just died yesterday though. :patriot: Served me well for 6-7 years...

Maybe the sammich card will actually be impressive.
considering the 580 is a single GPU and seems to outperform the 5970, which is dual-GPU, in most things is impressive within itself. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] also is crossfire scaling actually as close as it is with fermi? and is it across the board? any benchmarks? legitimate questions, not patronizing or anything silly like that [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] also, this is directed at the OP, you're seriously going to sell/trade in your 480 and buy a 580 for, at the most, a 20% performance increase? really?
So uh, were retail prices announced?
ATi Radeon 9600M? Do I win?(I'm pretty sure I do against the first, no idea about the second.)
Yes against the first, no against my Rage. Not sure about the GeForce 2.
