Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that all sides have agreed to steps to "de-escalate" the crisis in Ukraine at talks in Geneva.
He was speaking at the end of the talks between Russia, Ukraine, the EU and US in the Swiss city.
Ukraine has been in crisis since the toppling of its pro-Moscow president in February.
This was followed by the seizing of government buildings in eastern Ukraine by pro-Russian separatists.
Mr Lavrov said there was agreement that all illegal military formations in Ukraine must be dissolved, and that everyone occupying buildings must be disarmed and leave them.
He added that there would be an amnesty for all protesters under the agreement.
John Kerry is speaking right now

well I guess that's that.
What. Is. Going. Right. Now.

I've long since given up trying to understand what's going on between the Crimea, Russia, and The Ukraine.
This is like the third thread of crazy stuff going on in relation to Ukraine in the last 10 minutes or so.
Who the fuck activated the improbability drive
US General Secretary Gorbachev has announced that Brazil's independence referendum will be cancelled and declared war on Nazi Germany
Jesus Christ that video quality. Is this not 2014? Can we not at least get 720p?
Here's the deal

You can clearly understand that both Lavrov and Kerry are tired as fuck of this affair.

It's good to see diplomacy still works.
So is this all getting better or worse? What do I believe right now?
Something tells me this will backfire, as in the seperatists won't do a damn thing to disarm, Ukraine has no choice but to attack them, Russia says "the Kiev government broke the Geneva treaty, we are justified in protecting Russians in eastern Ukraine" and goes for a land grab.
Or who knows, maybe things will go well. We will see.
If everyone cooperates, this should at least restore some peace and sanity and at least cool down the Ukraine down to just a civil war and not a civil war that temporarily got put on hold due to annexation and sovereignty threats from the Shirtless Bear.
Except... The Crimea's been annexed and it's staying that way, right? Is that just a thing that's flatly done and Putin gets away with it while he had the opportunity during the crisis?
That kind of sets a really terrible precedent.
Aren't the pro-Russia separatists given support by Russian forces inside Ukraine? What's stopping them from continuing to instigate, saying the treaty doesn't work, and moving into eastern Ukraine anyway?
WAS THAT NEWS CONFERENCE FILMED WITH MY ASS BY ANY CHANCE

I can confirm that it was

It's strange to see such an important agreement being written up on Microsoft Word. For some reason, I expected a special DiploWord program instead.

Nobody uses WordStar anymore.
Whoa.
Logic and Reason? I haven't seen you two in a while.
What did they do in there? That's such a shocking reversal that there's got to be something more to this.
I think Russia realized that they got Crimea and didn't want to push this any farther yet. This may seem like the international community taking a stand against Russia, but the sad reality is that Russia "won" in a way.

Russia keeps Crimea or sanctions are removed perhaps? Maybe both.
A reporter at the press conference asked about Crimea and Kerry said it's still illegal bullshit and sanctions remain in place
I don't think the fight over the Crimea is over, but this is definitely an attempt to diplomatically achieve a state of at least on-the-streets peace in The Ukraine which, let us not forget, has basically been a fucking war zone since the sitting government attempted to pass laws banning democracy, and that did not happen last week.
If it walks us away from the ammo box and back to the nobody-is-shooting-each-other negotiations around a table in lit rooms in front of international media coverage, I think this constitutes a massive fucking improvement in every direction, even if it doesn't solve every problem.
I hope the sanctions stay active.
I mean, the rest of the world considers Crimea to be illegally occupied and the referendum invalid.
That sadly doesn't mean much. Look at Cyprus. Half the country is under illegal occupation by a fuckin' NATO country. A NATO country on EU's short-list of potential club-members for next season.
Guys, before we go all celebrating and all, just remember - Russia claims it has no authority over illegal armed groups in Ukraine.
So the stance our country takes here can very well not mean a shit.

It delegitimizes any ethnic-Russian insurgency within The Ukraine's (non-disputed) territory. The US doesn't have authority over either side, but it's signed on with Russia in saying, "Everyone calm the everloving fuck down."

Well, it means that those armed groups won't get the Russian support they're hoping for.

Yeah, and that pretty much saying nothing at all.
Well, it means that those armed groups won't get the Russian support they're hoping for.
Doesn't mean that as well. Because there's a very real possibility a) they'll get weapons and Russia will deny this, that is, if they haven't got enough yet and b) they'll screw up the situation enough for Ukrainian military to actually start doing something, and then it easily can get to "welp look at that, now we have to interfere".
If there's a thing recent history should've thought us at this point, it would be "Do not trust autocrats". Do not trust politicians at all for that matter, but autocrats, dictators and usurpers especially.
