SFU president and anti-Palestinian groups decry stencil of Edward Said as anti-Semitic.
An anti-Palestinian group is mounting an attack against students at San Francisco State University. Following an on-campus event honoring a mural of the late Palestinian scholar Edward Said, the group asserted that an artistic stencil glorified “the murder of Jews.”
The university’s president, at the urging of pro-Israel advocates, has joined the condemnation of the students.
On 7 November, as part of the sixth annual event to celebrate the mural and Palestinian culture, activists with several allied student organizations, including the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) and the Student Kouncil of Intertribal Nations (SKINS), an indigenous student group, set up informational tables on the campus’s Malcolm X Plaza.
The SKINS’ table made various stencils available for students to express themselves using images and slogans. One slogan read “my heroes have always killed colonizers,” which has been used for years by indigenous cultural workers in commemorating the resistance to the genocide of First Nations peoples and other indigenous communities around the world.
For the last two years, for example, indigenous communities have held cultural events entitled “My Heroes Have Always Killed Colonizers” in San Francisco during Indigenous Peoples’ Day — a day reclaimed from the national holiday celebrating the legacy of Christopher Columbus.
It didn’t take long for local Zionist watchdogs to launch a vicious attack against the entire event, the student organizations involved, and even the co-sponsoring academic department on campus, calling it “anti-Semitic” and insinuating that the stencil “glorif[ies] the murder of Jews.”
Trying to forcibly link anything related to the Palestinians' right to self-determination as antisemitism sounds pretty intolerant and bigoted to me.
Fuck off Said was an absolute bro
and one of the best post-colonial literary theorist I've read
If this is what qualifies as anti-semitism, I guess that makes me a proud anti-semite.

Bite me, Sobotnik.
Does that mean people posting this will get banned for anti-semitism?

A little harsh, perhaps. But I think that it's impossible to exaggerate just how low, reprehensible, and rabid the tactics and actions of Israel are, as a country.
It's even more deserving of scorn given its history and the past persecution of the Jewish people.
Hey fuck those guys. Said was cool.
I have seen far worse potential puns get frequently done in the first post
FP you have disappointed me today
Said's Orientalism is a fascinating book everyone should read, even if you don't like discursive analysis
And here I thought it was my uni.
The "anti-Semitic" stencil in question, the above source couldn't even been bother to report what the stencil was or who Edward Said was.

Actually that isn't the stencil, I don't see how you could have misread both sources pretty badly. That's the mural, it actually mentions the stencil elsewhere:
Tables had been set up close to the event by an array of organizations. One allowed people to make their own placards using a stencil that read, “My heroes have always killed colonizers,” noted the president’s statement.
A close up:

Also this has absolutely fuck all to do with Edward Said. He just happens to be on a mural, the complaint is about something else entirely and has nothing to do with him. It's pretty obvious that you are going to run into problems by printing "My heroes have always killed colonists" when its a pretty politically charged message which only serves to fuel more mutual hatred.

I mean you can't really go around with this and not expect people to start going "Eh?"
I am dismayed by the glorification of violence that this message conveys. There is no place at SF State for celebrating violence or promoting intolerance, bigotry, anti-Semitism or any other form of hate-mongering. We are a university community committed to furthering civil dialogue. Each of us must remain vigilant in working to achieve this goal.
The university is a place where dialogue, debate and the marketplace of ideas are cherished. We must also maintain a safe environment. Engaging in expressions that threaten and intimidate are counter to these goals. In addition to conveying my firm commitment to a safe and civil campus environment directly to any students involved, I will be meeting with members of the campus community to express my concerns, and to learn more about their perceptions of our current campus climate. University leadership will continue to gather information about this occurrence and address it appropriately. We prize our role as a forum for open discourse and we will continue to work toward a campus culture that cherishes civility.
This is the reason why it was banned. Not because of "Zionist defamation tactics".
Come on, you people need to do basic fact checking, including the fact That the mural posted in the OP is NOT the stencil.

Add that to the myriad of books I have to read.

Btw the complaint has nothing to do with him.

The phrase is not related purely to Palestine, it is related to resistance by indigenous people.
The stencil is in bad taste there, but it is pretty accurate.
Technically the pro Palestine is less biased than the other one, it explains the phrase's origins.
Lost my post from the edit system, its untrue to claim that the President did not complain about the mural. He actively attempted to block it.
To: San Francisco State University President, Robert A. Corrigan
We are writing to express our concern regarding your refusal of the mural celebrating Palestinian culture and commemorating the late Dr. Edward Said at San Francisco State University. In addition to blocking the Palestinian mural before it was officially submitted to you for your approval, you have placed an indefinite moratorium on all future artwork on the Cesar Chavez Student Center building.
Way to spin something completely out of context.
But the mural you posted as "The stencil" isn't the fucking stencil.
The "anti-Semitic" stencil in question
It fucking isn't the stencil. You're outright lying in the OP.
Its funny because I know exactly where you pulled your information from, you just neglected to leave out some pretty vital information.
Again, you outright lied. It doesn't matter. That picture of the mural in the OP is not the banned stencil. It gives a completely different picture of the situation to people coming into the thread.

I didn't lie, I made a mistake. It's still incredibly stupid of them to complain about it though. The stencils were made by a Native American Advocacy group.

Then you ought to change it.
