MANILA, Philippines (AP) — More than 30 police commandos were killed in a clash with Muslim insurgents Sunday in the southern Philippines in the biggest single-day combat loss for Filipino forces in many years, officials said.Dozens of commandos had entered the far-flung village of Tukanalipao at dawn looking for a top terror suspect, but had a "misencounter" with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Mayor Tahirudin Benzar Ampatuan of Mamasapano town told The Associated Press by telephone. Other insurgents in the area later joined in fighting the outnumbered police forces, the mayor said. The 11,000-strong Moro group signed a peace deal with the government last year and forged a cease-fire, which has been safeguarded by a Malaysia-led team of foreign truce monitors and has halted major conflicts between the two sides for years. Ampatuan, the Moro group and military officials said the police commandos did not coordinate their plan to enter the Muslim rebel village before sunrise, apparently resulting in the fierce fighting. The fighting in the marshy village of cornfields and coconut plantations subsided after several hours when members of a cease-fire committee and foreign truce monitors intervened, Ampatuan said, adding he deployed a team of village leaders and guards, who saw more than 30 of the slain commandos scattered in the battle scene. "What they described to me was gruesome," Ampatuan said. At least two villagers were wounded in the gunbattle. A few thousand villagers fled from their homes near the scene of the fighting, he said.
http://bigstory.ap.org/article/3b9069bec6884b62a39a975d14e0dd96/30-filipino-police-commandos-killed-clash-rebels Well damn, that's a rather high number. I know for a fact that the insurgents are pretty well armed.
man that is a huge amount of casualties for professional soldiers for a single day
thirty, damn. I wonder how many insurgents died though.
"Islamic Liberation Front" every group of assholes always has a bullshit name
I didn't realise there was active conflicts in the Philippines, where else are these radical Islamic groups fighting?
I didn't realise there was active conflicts in the Philippines, where else are these radical Islamic groups fighting?
Indonesia. They were involved with killing 200+ people in the Bali Bombings.
I didn't realise there was active conflicts in the Philippines, where else are these radical Islamic groups fighting?
Yeah you got Abu Sayyaf, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the New People's Army.
Fuck MILFs.
Guess we now know why the article didn't use any acronyms.
Fuck MILFs.
That acronym still makes me chuckle every time I hear it on local news
The current body count is actually 64 now. Really sucks. One of the dead cops with his head blown off in a particular video of the aftermath was actually my friend's neighbour. He told me about how his neighbour's family were crying all day and stuff. Another acquaintance of mine actually cries when she hears about stuff like these, because her dad is a soldier stationed in Jolo, which is a place heavily infested with rebels like these.

Like they do they often have clashes with soldiers and stuff?

At least that's what I remember.

Filipino military/police forces are really underarmed and undertrained http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_hostage_crisis
Man, just realizing now how close this hits to home. I remember looking at this guy's pre-nuptial shots like, a few months before, and his wife is apparently six months pregnant now. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/MxIBdmh.jpg[/thumb] I even watched his wedding video. Now he's dead, and it totally blows. Feels sad just looking at their wedding shots. This one's a fresh graduate from a year ago [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/FLLirDs.jpg[/thumb] This guy's a friend of my old math teacher [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/ACmW6VA.jpg[/thumb] Another two from my girlfriend's church died too, she just saw them last Sunday. And my friend's neighbor. I don't know if it's rude posting their photos and stuff but those are public, and I just wanted to share it to you. These were just normal guys living their lives in peace just a few days ago and it's heartbreaking to know that they won't live to see another day again. All of this over religion... Wow. It's like killing large numbers of people because they don't think Batman is the best superhero.
