Few Americans eat horse meat, and many don't like the idea of horses being slaughtered. But a handful of investors are struggling to restart a horse-slaughter industry in the U.S.
Thousands of American horses are already slaughtered for the European and Asian markets for horse meat each year in Mexico and Canada.
Proponents of reviving the U.S. slaughterhouses argue that they would be good for the horse business, and more humane than the current situation of shipping them across the borders. The issue cleaves horse owners into two camps: those that view horses as pets, and those who see them as livestock.
Horse is delicious, just throwing that out there.
The problem isn't really in the fact that it's horse. It's that it's marketed as 100 percent fucking beef when it's 0 percent beef and 100 percent horse.
If it was just offered, it'd have a chance, but the main problem is that the way they're peddling it is throwing it into the ingredients without listing it.
I mean you could argue both points, they can be both pets and livestock.
I view horses as tools for rounding up livestock, transportation and as pets. I mean yes I guess you can slaughter them but I kind of find it a waste to something that can be used for a greater purpose if you know what I mean.

In a way it's better for an injured horse to be used for livestock than for it to just be shot and decay.
Why not both?
the way it's raised is the determining factor i'd say. my family used to have a pet pig and i wouldn't have been impressed at all if we killed and ate her. but i eat pork heaps

No. That was Horsegate in Europe. This is about introducing horsemeat, as horsemeat, in the United States. Which is a damn good idea. Eat them horses, mmmhm!
Why waste good meat?
people keep chickens as pets
doesn't mean we can't eat them
imagine a world without chicken
a world without chicken is a world that i don't want to be a part of
It is a bit sad to think about. I love horses, they have as much personality as the family dog. But while I'd never eat one, I don't think I'd make an effort to stop anyone else from it. I mean its a strange case, I consider them pets, but on the otherhand, its not actually as outlandish as I feel it is to see them as livestock.
American culture would prevent horse meat from catching on simply because of the way horses are portrayed in the media/popular culture. They're seen as mans companion.
We ship them to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered anyway as the article. I say better to do it here where we can make sure it meets humane standards rather than shipping them to Mexico.
There isn't much difference between a horse and a cow, or maybe even a dog.
Why draw moral lines, it's just a ridiculous lie you are telling yourself.
They all feel, they all bleed. Eat meat or don't.
Pigs are smart
and we eat them. so why not a horse.
Horse would probably be healthier than beef anyway, more muscle and less fat.

I wouldn't mind owning a pig.
But they eat. EVERYTHING they can get in their mouths.
Fucking hate horses.
Fucking hate their wanna-be cowboy owners too.
Meat is meat. If you can shoot it you can eat it.
I get the whole argument for it but I'd rather not eat horse for the whole pet reason and always having them around as I grew up
This seems to be quite cultural really. I know in the UK most hate the idea of eating a horse, seeing them more as pets, while other countries have no problem with eating them, much the same can also be said of other animals like dogs or cats, who in europe are seen as pets, but as food in other countries.

I'd prefer a world were we didn't eat meat, but since so many vegetables taste vile to me the alternative isn't great.

Fish are pets and food.
I've even had a frog and eaten a different species.
I've even owned a legit snail but I've never eaten a snail but I wouldn't turn it down

eat shit
I've been confused with all this horse meat crap in Europe. The hell, I though horse meat cost more than beef. I know that the problem was with them lying, but really, horse meat, why not, I dunno, use pork or chicken, or something.

I've shot at tin cans and stuff before, I will now eat tin cans.

Seriously.
Never before has some retard spewed forth such ignorance that it made me want to bury my foot in their ass. to the knee.
Pigs are much much much smarter than horses yet we slaughter them, I don't see the issue with slaughtering an animal of lesser intelligence. It's not endangered or anything.

oh someone else said this exact thing
They were actually originally domesticated for food purposes. That doesn't go without saying horse meat has phenomenal nutritious value. Very good calorie-fat-protein ratio (603-21-97 for a pound of it), twice the iron content (almost 100% of your daily need), more than twice as much vitamin b12 (227% of your daily need), and, hear this; one pound of horse meat contains roughly *1632 mg* of omega 3 fatty acids AND 1315 mg of omega 6 fatty acids. A standard beef strip steak only has at best 44.9mg and 171mg. I would dare call horse meat a super food.
No wonder this guy swears by horse meat:
