The Court's decision could ultimately lead to a ruling reinstating the law, passed in 2005, that prohibited the sale or rental of certain violent video games to children younger than 18 years old. So far, video game makers have successfully challenged the law saying it violates their freedom of expression. Last year, the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals expressed sympathy with California lawmakers who were attempting to protect children from the potentially harmful effects of exposure to violent video games, but nonetheless ruled against the law. A unanimous three judge panel concluded the law was too broad and that the state didn't sufficiently link the video games to a concern that minors exposed to the games will be more likely to commit violent crimes. It further held that even if the state were able to make such a link, there are other measures the state could have taken that wouldn't threaten First Amendment protections. In its petition to the Court, California argues the justices should expand a late 1960's ruling that prohibits of sale of sexual material to minors to include violent video games. It also says the current industry imposed labeling standards for video games is ineffective. A final ruling by the Court, which will not come until next year, will likely impact the handful of other states that have similar laws.
http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/04/26/high-court-takes-california-video-game-case/?test=latestnews I'm curious to how that will turn out (Referring to http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=928961)
meh.. fuck em.. dajjal is coming soon anyway.
This won't change anything, just about every store I have ever been in does a good job of enforcing the current ratings. I have never seen a kid walk in to a Gamestop and buy a M rated game without a parent there. This law does nothing to stop stupid parents from buying there 6 year old GTA4.

I'm 19 and I still fucking get ID'd.
@Zombie Snail, it is not wise to say these things brother.
My best friend works at gamestop and he won't even let me buy strat guides for m rated games!
My best friend works at gamestop and he won't even let me buy strat guides for m rated games!
Who buys guides when you have google?
i support this from what i see and from parent's testimony, the videogames have this electronic device that turns the parents blind, deaf, and dumb. unable to teach their child the difference between reality and fantasy even though they're parents who should teach them these things.
^Agree [editline]03:32PM[/editline] Fuck ninja I meant this to RedBlade Anyways, I've been playing violent video games since 4. First game: Quake 2, second, Soldier of Fortune, then Counterstrike, then Call Of Duty, and Bad Company 2. Whats gonna stop me now? My parents have no problem in buying me games.
I love Russian game rating laws. I mean lack of them.
A new law would mean absolute nothing. Every store I go to usually requires ID (Target sometimes hasn't checked for me.)
Protect the children. Fuck everyone else. Mature guy want to buy a 'violent' game? Fuck you, we're banning it because it's too violent for the children.
Gotta love redundant laws that try to "protect the keedz."
This is the only anti-video game law thread I will reply to, because most are just too silly to repsond to, due to the fact that the bills will get NOWHERE Protect the kids is horse shit. Let parents do parenting for themselves, assholes
Protect the children. Fuck everyone else. Mature guy want to buy a 'violent' game? There is nothing in there about banning violent games.
I'm 19 and I still fucking get ID'd.
I'm 20 and I get ID'd. Hell, I'll probably still be ID'd for atleast the next 10 years of my life. Atleast.
Bunch of ignorant old people running a witchhunt against things they don't understand.
Wait so it's a law saying that stores can't sell games that are rated 18+ to kids who are not 18+? Am I missing something because it makes sense to me.
Wait so it's a law saying that stores can't sell games that are rated 18+ to kids who are not 18+? Am I missing something because it makes sense to me.
nope you aren't missing anything seriously
nope you aren't missing anything seriously
^This. Thank you for explaining brother.
Wait so it's a law saying that stores can't sell games that are rated 18+ to kids who are not 18+? Am I missing something because it makes sense to me.
Do you understand how the rating system works?
I have to have my parents buy me video games...This doesn't change shit. Oh well...I still buy 90% of my games from steam anyway.
I'm 19 and I still fucking get ID'd.
Strange, recently I went to Walmart to buy BC2 and they didn't check my id. Although, I'm 18, so no foul. Still, this is a silly law and I hope the Supreme Court repeal the law.
I don't care, I'm 17 :smug:
I used to buy 18+ video games at walmart all the time, cashier dident seem to care when I bought TF2.
People worry too much about this stuff.
Do you understand how the rating system works?
I only have a basic understanding since I've always used Steam. That's why I asked if I was missing something. But I thought Mature meant "you can't buy this without adult supervision if you're under 18", which is how ratings have always worked for most mediums in the modern age.
you know what, i don't get the hate on fox news. they actually are pretty fair and balanced compared to the other news networks. any bias is in, oh gee, in opinion segments. even then the opinion segments are fairly moderated too.

It would be stupid if it banned minors from playing violent video games even if there parents allowed them. All this does is make it illegal to sell M rated games to young kids. I don't know why everyone here is so against this considering I hear people complaining about 12 year olds playing online and yelling in to mics all the time.
