The news magazine Panorama said the same NSA eavesdropping program that angered leaders in Germany, France, Spain and Mexico also listened in on calls to and from the Vatican, including the phones in the Santa Marta guesthouse that housed Bergoglio and the rest of the College of Cardinals. Pope Francis still lives in the guesthouse, but the magazine did not speculate whether the phones there were still tapped. Panorama, which said that Bergoglio had been identified as a “person of interest” by the NSA dating back to the 2005 conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI, said recorded communications from the Vatican were categorized in one of four sections: leadership, financial system threats, foreign policy objectives and human rights issues. “It is feared that the great American ear tapped prelates’ conversations right up to the conclave,” Panorama said. The Vatican declined to comment at length about the report. The Vatican’s chief spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, issued only a short statement saying, “We have heard nothing of this and are not worried.”
Even if this isn't an accurate report, I think it's clear that the USA has to have a discussion with itself about what it wants the NSA to do, because currently the NSA's mode seems to be stuck on "fucking grab everything ever". Also, I was going to make a confession joke, but that's not Catholic. :v: [editline]30th October 2013[/editline] No, wait, it is. Fuck. :v:

Is there anyone the NSA doesn't spy on?
Is there anyone the NSA doesn't spy on?
The NSA?
Great job NSA, pissing off countries left and right and now about to piss off one of the largest religions in the world, spanning across dozens of countries.
Clearly there were terrorists in the Vatican!
Is there anyone the NSA doesn't spy on?
Snowden said he could tap Obama, so I would seriously not put it past them to have had someone listening closely, not for some sort of anti-Obama intelligence gathering (although fuck who knows), but so that they don't have to go through the hassle of bureaucracy to get answers to questions from the President so they know how to interpret incoming data because they already have it as much as possible. Now they're going to go back to using scrolls and carrier pigeons just to be safe. [editline]30th October 2013[/editline] Unless the NSA develops its own carrier birds like the one on the logo *NSA eagle swoops down and kills Vatican pigeon, steals scroll*
The pope was trying so hard to destabilize america. Good thing they spied on him so he never could pull through with his heinous plans.
The pope is a matter of national security that can effect the stability of this country :v:
Excommunicate USA.
The pope is a matter of national security that can effect the stability of this country :v:
The pope is kinda important even in this day and age. Not everything intelligence agencies do is directly about terrorism, it's more about keeping politicians informed. 'Hey I want to know if the pope's gonna say something that could harm our relations with Europe' - so they get the NSA to spy on the pope. I don't believe for a second that the US is the only country to be listening in on the Vatican, especially given how touchy Catholicism is in some of the European states.
The end times of America are nearing, gentlemen.
What do you expect the NSA to do, they were in the process of electing someone that a large portion of the world believes is actually Gods messenger. Of course they were going to spy on it.
