Chnaging my microphone jack into a headphones jack?

Hello everyone,
I use a Lenovo y580 laptop. It's really a great computer, but I had an accident yesterday where I accidentally tripped over my headphones. The headphones ended up disconnected from the headphones port, and the port was physically broken.
Living in a college dorm with two other people, I don't think I'd be able to get away with playing sound directly from my computer speakers. Is it possible that I could repurpose my microphone port to work as a headphones port?
The computer seems to recognize that a device has been plugged in when I plug my headphones into the microphone port, but it continues to play sound from the speakers.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
You could use something like http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SD-CM-UAUD-Adapter-C-Media-Chipset/dp/B001MSS6CS/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1358180868&sr=1-2&keywords=USB+headphones&tag=side01b-20 if you can afford it. I bet you can find some cheaper ones too.
Make sure you don't fall into the XY problem! Your solution might not always be the best one to your problem.
That's a good point. Right now though, I'm primarily looking at repurposing my microphone port because it seems both the simplest and the cheapest course of action.
It might not be ideal considering you have to use the laptop daily, but you could try sending it in during a vacation.
Otherwise get one of those USB thingies.
Get the cheapest usb sound card/dac you can justify
Or you can try removing all sound drivers and installing the realtek generic ones, you might get the ability to remap ports*
*only if you have a realtek sound card of course and get really lucky
I have the same problem too. I really wish they would make headphones that are usb-only already.
Hmmm? USB Headphones
I confirm that what Darkimmortal said should work with some luck.

USB headphones should work no matter what, not sure if I would recommend that especially if you're gaming, but if it's casual and there isn't too much noise then it's fine.

I do a mixture of both. Why wouldn't USB headphones be good for gaming?
Anyway, since my laptop is still on warranty, I suppose I'll just send it in during Spring break. At home I have a desktop computer that works perfectly fine, but it lights up like a Christmas tree and sounds like a lawnmower.
Usually it is impossible to remap a mic input to a sound output, as the DAC and ADC are hardwired behind them.
Only real way of doing it, would be to open them and change the wires around (provided the ADC and ADC are not soldered to the same bord as the female jacks.
I think the best and easiest solution is an USB sound card.
What drivers do you have? You might not be able to change it from the GUI though, but remapping them from the registry works.
In case it is Realtek HD audio ofc. Might be possible, MIGHT, with ac97.
My soundcard is integrated into my motherboard. Apparently my drivers on the audio-ports are also up to date.
You might also be able to open the laptop and replace the headphone jack.
