Sony on Wednesday raised its forecast annual loss more than fourfold to $2.14 billion, blaming its struggling mobile phone business. The Japanese electronics giant said it now expects to lose 230 billion yen in the fiscal year to March 2015, up from a previous forecast net loss of 50 billion yen and reflecting a drop in the value of its mobile unit. Sony has cut expectations for sales in the smartphone business, which has been reporting operating losses, as it faces off against rivals including Apple and South Korea's Samsung.
https://sg.news.yahoo.com/sony-warns-2-14-bn-annual-loss-over-063014790.html
230 billion yen
...So like, 20 dollars? :v:
...So like, 20 dollars? :v:
No, 2.14 billion.
No, 2.14 billion.
It was obviously hyperbole
Sony is going to need make their own Minecraft.
Kind of like they made their own Super Smash Brothers right :v:
Hypocresy! When you insult a Microsoft console as abusive and yet buy it because... what? It's an XBOX! Fanboyism is really weird.
Seems like building good smartphones doesn't really pay off. Actually expected this year to turn around their mobile business (it seems like they did as well).
I had no idea Sony was even invested in the smartphone market until just now.

How did you morph a thread about Sony losing money into talking about Xbox fanboys v:v:v Sony is a completely shitty company too anyway, see: infecting products with spyware, raiding homes of modders, etc. One of my favourite consoles of all time was the PS2 but honestly I could not feel bad for Sony if they went bankrupt given all the shit they've done.

In gaming we're all losers regardless the console we're following. What seems ironical and what perhaps comes along with this thread is how much more people opted to the XBONE rather than the PS4. I kinda guess it's the reason for the mentioned loss (of course there are so many other factors I assume).
It was obviously hyperbole
Or it was a blatant under-valuation / insult of China's shitty communist currency.. coming from who else but an American poster. (User was banned for this post ("Country Trolling" - Craptasket))
Or it was a blatant under valuation / insult of China's shitty communist currency.. coming from who else but an American poster.
Uh, but the Yen is Japanese, and so is Sony?
What a shame, especially since the Z3 and Z3 compact are shaping up to be some of the best smartphones this generation.
Uh, but the Yen is Japanese, and so is Sony?
Shit..
Uh, pretty sure the PS4 is outselling the Xbone pretty much everywhere, no idea where you got the idea that the PS4 was a failure.
Honestly, I have no clue where this loss is coming from now that you tell. I guess magic? EDIT: Ok, I guess I got to read the thread better. This meant for smartphones, not consoles. Duh. Pardon me.

They sell the hardware at a loss (because the price people expect to pay for consoles is insane compared to how expensive the parts are) and then they make the money back by licensing games for the console as well as selling their own first party games. Both the next gen consoles are basically in a state right now where almost all of their games are shit and you could probably pretty easily own all of them
I just noticed...
It's not the worst part, like pointed by our dear Zone.
Sony's gaming market isn't its only source of income...
Sorry. I just remembered that when actually reading again the OP.
Worth noting that selling consoles actually loses you money, just so you know. It's more like break even. That doesn't mean that the hardware itself doesn't result in a loss, though - R&D and distribution costs mean they have a lot to make up for.
There's a shitstorm on /v/ about this right now and from what I gathered, Sony has a crapload of divisions and some of them are poorly marketed or just facing extremely tough competition, like the mobile phone department. They have to compete with Samsung and iOS, which both already have extremely huge install bases, iOS on brand alone and Samsung being cheap using Android, which is developer friendly. I can't really think of what Sony phones have that can trump those aspects that the other phones have apart from hardware and maybe software accessibility. I've never used a Sony phone though so perhaps someone could educate me on that.
I've had my eyes on the Xperia Z1 Compact for a while. I really dig their phones.
Samsung Galaxy user here anyway, may I ask how do Sony smartphones feel?
Maybe they shouldn't have spent so much time investing in 3D TVs and other bullshit that came to nothing. A loss on the year after a new console release is pretty normal but you usually need something else to balance it out. Playstation is one of the best bits of Sony right now.
Samsung Galaxy user here anyway, may I ask how do Sony smartphones feel?
Love mine so much. Well-built and doesn't hang, ever.
They are absolutely solid, they don't use the gross, slick plastics Samsung do.
iirc the Z1 had a terrible screen, and so did a lot of Sony smartphones. Low contrast was the biggest problem. Still, the new ones are pretty great. Don't agree with the notion that Samsung phones are crap, though - they're pretty good, and they're backed with an enormous marketing budget.
