Border Patrol Looking To House Immigrants In Abandoned Warehouses Along Rio Grande
More than 52,000 children have entered the country illegal in recent months, many of them coming into the U.S. through South Texas. Former Zapata County Sheriff Gonzales, who now works as a consult with law enforcement agencies along the Texas border, says space is running out to house the children and adults that are coming across.
“The local governments are being overwhelmed because of the possibilities for diseases. There are people that are being apprehended that are coming in with warrants for murders or prior convictions for child abuse, and these are the guys that are coming in the same groups with 12 year olds and 5 year olds,” says Zapata. “They’re looking at some centers in the valley… abandoned buildings where they’re going to put fences inside the buildings to create detention cells and just throw people in there. “
Zapata says the situation is unprecedented, but the closest comparison would be to how the Astrodome in Houston was used during Hurricane Katrina, when 25,000 evacuees were housed inside of it.
“They’re going to go in there and divide the whole building into 4 pieces or 8 pieces using a hurricane fence or a cyclone fence and just put people in… until they’re processed.”
Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo), who works closely with agents along the border, confirmed the border patrol’s intentions to create additional housing areas.
“Its basically a former warehouse and they’re working on retrofitting that to re-house the kids,” says Cuellar. “There’s really no other places to do this, but we’re trying to do the best that we can.”
Well there are tons of old warehouses sitting derelict everywhere because of the manufacturing bust in the late 90s / early 2000s, and most of them have huge square footage.
I don't see an issue with housing detainees in them if they can provide humane conditions. It's certainly better than having them run free or being housed in tents or other makeshift housing.
They're also sending immigrants to California and looking into sending some to New York.
as long as the warehouses are properly maintained and have all the facilities for living then i guess it isn't that bad but it looks like they're just going to make cells out of rented fencing and keep it inside of a warehouse
Can't wait for a conservative to trash this place only to get banned for being a racist.
Anyways, This is a step forward in the right direction! I'm suprized that we even did this if it wasn't some excuse for "libertard tricking"

Not having proper facilities would be a massive human rights violation.
Now as far as the conditions, it most likely will be a bunch of cell type rooms designed to house multiple people each. They have to be as space efficient as possible with the current circumstances.

You realize these aren't permanent right? These are just "storage" for processing. They are by all means not guaranteed to stay here.

Plus all that open floor space means you can configure the housing arrangement on the fly, as needed, and it's just a much better place to put people.
Hell they could even get fancy and put up those interlocking wall segments like you see in office buildings, they can be put up and torn down easily and are sturdy enough to handle a bunch of rowdy people. You can even put up a ceiling over that for privacy too. Hell you could probably set up temporary housing in this manner that's so good it's better than the conditions some of them left. I suppose that would send a shitty message though, "when we slap shit together it is better than anything you've ever known," so if they ever legally stay here, holy shit, they're going to be in for a huge let down.
I'm actually a bit surprised this hasn't been more harshly received here...
They are not creating apartments- they are essentially large holding pens. Dirty concrete floor and bailing wire fences. For furniture I suspect surplus cots, shower facilities would be jury rigged.
This wouldn't be completely horrible for a day or so but anything longer then that would be hell.

What are they dogs?
What are they dogs?
Well first of all, they are criminals. By coming here illegally, they have broken the law already.
Second of all, you can't just let everyone waltz on in. It's a fact that some of these immigrants have diseases, which are already spreading to the border patrol agents who are catching them and taking care of them while they are processed. If you DON'T screen and treat those diseases and just let the people mingle around with the populace, you could have an epidemic very quickly once the diseases spread. And before anyone starts, I'm NOT saying that all immigrants are disease infested. I'm saying that some of them do have contagious diseases that they caught on their way over.
