As consoles become more like personal computers with their patches and their upgrades, so too do PCs become more like consoles, with more people using control pads and hooking them up to TVs than ever before.
Alienware sees a market in this, with the launch of the X51, a small PC that looks, and is designed to act, as much like a console as a computer.
On the inside, it's of course a PC. The base model, with a Core i3, 4GB RAM and GT545 should be able to handle Battlefield 3 at close to full settings. You can then upgrade as you fancy.
But the casing itself is small, and designed specifically to be slung either vertically or horizontally under a TV set.
With Steam launching its "Big Picture" mode later this year, and more and more console games coming to PC with better graphics and control pad support, this might not be as stupid an idea as it first sounds.

240 watts......
why would anyone do that
I like the way it looks
Sure, it doesn't have the greatest specs in the entire world, but it's still better than what I use right now.
I kinda like the look of it.
And the point of it is..?
I like the way it looks
I agree, but that would be the only part I like

You should buy it, then realize how overly expensive it is for what you get.
And the point of it is..?
looks better than your average case tbh
Holy shit, with that kind of powersupply I'd be scared to even turn it on.
I don't get who is supposed to buy this? I mean it can't exactly compete with consoles since it probably won't be anywhere near the price range and I don't see why PC gamers would buy it either.
Like other Alienware stuff, it looks nice though.
you could probably just buy the case, and then buy all the parts that are in it now and still shave off a couple of a hundred dollars.

6Kg and 240 watts, portable as fuck compared to my PC, which must be at least three times bigger, 12Kg and 600 watts.

The price is $699. What would you say would be a better PC for that same price (or less)?
I bet it's going to cost normal pc price x 5
Now available for seven times the price of a desktop with comparable hardware!

very fucking easily
anything you could buy the parts for and assemble
[editline]19th January 2012[/editline]
also 699 sounds like the cheapest possible model

???
what does power consumption have to do with portability
you're not running it off a battery
If it's cheap, why no-oh... Alienware...

for 700$ its really not that bad. I was expecting it to be like 900-1000$
It looks much better than average Alienware product.
I would even say that it looks pretty good.
I want microsoft to do an xbox style that atleast is as good as this, would not hurt them. Price is okay for this thing, a dude I know bought an laptop from alienware for 2000€ and it's not even half as good from the specs as this one lol.
DAT OVERHEATING
It looks like an HTPC, not a console.
You guys sound like you're expecting a gaming machine. It's great to sit it below your TV as a media station for movies and internet browsing from the comfort of your couch.

Only 700?
Pretty nice I guess
Holy shit, with that kind of powersupply I'd be scared to even turn it on.
why most systems don't even draw 400w
ANd, ofcourse, it has the ~~G4M1NG1337L00K~~, courtesy of Alienware
size of power supply, ability to upgrade with higher end gpus
Why system draws with 6970, X6, 16GB ram, 2HDD's Optical drive rarely hit 450w. People always just grossly overestimate PSU requirements

upgrade? where on earth do you think you'll be able to stick the card?
it's not like a normal case with plenty of room inside
this seems a fairly good idea but judging by the previous efforts of this company I'm in no hurry to try it
-snip, something got mixed up-
