My icons take forever to load on startup, suddenly..

So, ever since yesterday, when GMod had completely locked up and forced me to restart my PC, my icons take about twice as long as normal to load on startup. It's quite annoying, but everything else in the background is already running by the time the icons appear (For example, before, if I started Mozilla Firefox as soon as my PC started, it'd be a minute or so before it actually started. Now, if I start it as soon as I see the actual icon, it'll be up almost instantly), so not all is bad.
What is the problem and how can I fix it?
Also, I'm not posting my specs because I don't feel they're necessary/have any relevance to this problem, but if I really need to, I will.

Since you're the one asking for help, that's not really for you to decide, is it?
You should always post specs, helps us help you faster.
I had a virus that made explorer.exe not work. I had no desktop icons or taskbar/startmenu, and I had to run everything through my task manager. Mind you, everything ran almost twice as fast, but it was quite annoying to have to run programs like that. You might want to check for a virus first obviously.
