Russia has announced that it intends to build a base on the moon within 20 years, which it plans to use as a staging post for a manned mission to Mars.
The promise was made as Vladimir Putin, the prime minister, chaired a meeting on Russia's space program ahead of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first man in space.
The Kremlin is using Tuesday's anniversary to boost patriotic sentiment and briefing documents handed out prior to the Mr Putin's meeting showed it is determined to restore the nation's space -program to its Soviet-era glory.
"Above all, we are talking about flights to the moon and the creation of a base close to its north pole where there is likely to be a source of water," the briefing document said.
A manned mission to Mars would be possible after 2030, the report added.
Mr Putin said Russia was already responsible for 40 per cent of all space launches but said it could do better. "I think we can up that by five or even 10 per cent in the foreseeable future," he said.
The Kremlin is pouring more money into its program with plans for a new cosmodrome and a new spacecraft well advanced.
However, Alexander Serebrov, a former cosmonaut, said that talk of a moon base was premature. He said: "Our scientists are of an age that means they will not live to see these things and therefore they do not care what they say."

Putin has a moon base.
what does your country have?
Using the moon as a hub for Mars missions is a awesome idea.
*He will be Putin a base on the moon.
I think it will be a lot like this.

Bet you were russian in here to make that pun
finally someone thought about moving to the moon, fucks sake, america went there in the 60's and then nothing...
Could this mean the start of a second space race?
If so, Fuck yeah.
If not, still fuck yeah.
Wasn't this a James Bond movie?
Well, better the Bear than no-one at all. I just hope they don't charge any outrageous sums for other nations using Springboard.
Hopefully it'll create a new space race.
They'll have trouble with that once they lose Baikonur Cosmodrome.
Talk about a Red Dawn.

Moon war with the Nazis! Hovertanks!
Soyuz was originally designed for trans-lunar flights. They just need to work on their LEM then you have a barebones landing vehicle, then you can go from there, landing near pre-launched cargo packages maybe?
That is, if the Russian space agency can get it right this time - the Soviet government pretty much destroyed the space race for the USSR by pressuring them too much. Cosmonauts and ground staff died because of it.
They'll have trouble with that once they lose Baikonur Cosmodrome.
That is however, implying that Baikonur would ever return from being Russian territory.

They already got that covered.
Fuck. I'm living in Russia and...
TAXPAYERS MONEY.
We haven't got normal roads and clean, proper streets, but we've got moon base.

Russia isnt as bad as you think, its just different.
Why waste money on a road to a village 1000km away where 10 people live, when you have much better stuff to do with it.
(No im not russian, yes I have been there)

Moonbase can deliver food, water and Medicare to a village?

Well that sounds like what russia has been always. I bet they would find even bigger waste of that money than this in russia.
For the 2100 Space Olympics? Fuck yea

Race?
What do you mean by that? Why do we have to race each other any way, especially in awesome shit like this space exploring. It's not like we can write our name all over space or whatever the fuck, anyone can claim it as their own, and that's up to no good :colbert:
I remember a really old comic where Soviet cosmonauts and Nazi Astronauts both constructed moon bases and had a war on the moon. :v:
We all know Russia isn't actually going to do any of that shit.
