I've had my E6850 for 3 years or so and I've been using the stock cooler all that time.
Lately my computer has had random fps drops in games (even games such as minecraft). I got a bit worried and checked my temps.
The CPU was at 70-90 degrees celcius, it has usually been idling at about 30-40 but now it's at 67 with only chrome, steam and skype running.
I've cleaned out the heatsink from dust. It didn't help that much.
Could it be that the thermal paste is old, and that it needs replacing?
The stock HSF has those flimsy shit prongs to attach itself to the motherboard, one of those probably broke or popped loose under the strain of holding the HSF to the board, which would cause the CPU to overheat.
Check to see if any of the prongs have come loose and push them back in. You may also want to put more thermal paste on.

You need to replace the paste every time you take the heatsink off.
