As development in Beta has progressed, one thing has become very apparent, Kerbal Space Program is about to reach a state in which every single one of the original goals for the game has been reached, and we can say that our original design document has been fulfilled.
Because of this, the next update will be our 1.0 release, and with it we will be leaving Early Access. This is a landmark moment for us at Squad, as after over four years of development, we feel that KSP is finally ready to be viewed by all as a complete game. However, this is not the end by any means.
What does 1.0 mean for everyone then? Most noticeably, it means KSP will be leaving the Early Access program. And while this does mean we are ready to call KSP a complete game after the next release, it does not mean development itself is complete. Far from it, in fact.
1.0 is adding some great stuff too:
* Engineer's Report:
A new panel in the VAB and SPH which will warn you of crucial (and generally frustrating) issues in your design, such as a lack of fuel tanks, engines or landing gear, among many other advanced concepts like those.
* TimeWarp To:
Fumble with timewarp and mess up your burns no more, with this new feature you can choose a point along your orbit and the game will take you there as fast as physically possible.
* Deep Space and Planetary Refueling:
Adding a new system and a set of parts that will allow you to collect matter from Asteroids and other bodies, then process it into useful things, like Fuel or Oxidizer.

Man I remember buying this from their website when it was just kerbal and mun, strapping a ton of rockets together in hopes of leaving the atmosphere and being happy when you just achieve orbit. What a long way they've come.

Shit, remember finding out about the game on a thread here when it was just strap boosters to a capsule and send it in the sky.
came a very long way, im proud that the game has never been a dissapointment really.
I find this game to be one of the greatest examples of early access.
It's always received content filled updates, and has a giant modding community

Meh, not really the only reason the game is still alive is thanks to modding the content squad adds is really lackluster and not really what people want.

I'm curious if that means they'll be throwing in a built in thrust to weight ratio warning, delta-v calculator, and drag warning (If a parachute cannot hold a structure).

Holy fuck, yes! I can actually have a self-sustainable colony now!
It was a little touch and go for awhile. People got super pissed that they ditched the would be new resource system just before it was about to release and the updates became lackluster for awhile. But the last few have redeemed those failures
A lot of the games perforamnce problems are issues with Unity, I'm extremeley anxious to get a proper windows 64 bit version.
If you ever want to make a performance heavy game, don't make it on unity.
So many planets explored and so many kerbals [del]lost forever[/del] out on extended adventures. I cannot wait to see where my new kerbals will find themselves.
i love this game like no other game, but it's still full of bugs and they haven't ever optimized it
I remember one update that made huge improvements to the speed of the physics simulation, but I'm sure it still has a long way to go.
Imagine GPU powered physics, hnnng
squad could fix most of the performance issues if they actually cared.
Like a lot of early access games, Devs got their money, got bored of working on the project and lost their drive, then release an unfinished game because hey, they've already made their money.
Not that it'd all make any difference to me, all I've ever done without using mechjeb in this game is pummel the shit out of the moon with kamikaze pilots mounted on giant rockets.
the physx version they're using is fucking ancient
they could just fucking update it but they mentioned it would be "too difficult" aka "it would take actual work"
unity 5 also has huge enhancements but nooo
I honestly think this early access game has run its course, the devs seem to only be updating because they're tied to just shoving out a release product. I wouldn't expect much in the lead up to 1.0, and after that I think it'll just be dead in the water by looking at the steady decline of development.
I sure hope I'm wrong.
stop using mechjeb, it creates bad habits
if you need help learning actual ksp add me on steam and ill be happy 2 help
I haven't played KSP in like six months, to be fairly honest.

I'm sure it's not as simple as that at all.

I don't know about you, but I don't think that working on and regularly updating a game for four years is comparable to other "take the money and run" early access stuff.
I guess I'll finally buy the game, then.

There are other things as well, mostly how a some parts they introduce (NASA pack) were really bad quality because C7 was forced to rush them. They probably wont go back and fix those for a long time (if ever).
Squad just seems really weird when it comes to actual content creation. I remember when they made one of the new VAB's (the wooden stuff). It all had loads of inconsistent textures, bad modelling choices etc. It looked like someone's first attempt at a hl2 map. They were actually going to release this until the community basic went "what the hell is this crap?".
The most amusing thing is, considering how much they rely on the modding community. They don't support it very well at all. They're really bad at guiding people on how to do things, most of that is done by those of us who already know or managed to figure it out ourselves.
It's a love hate relationship to say the least.
This game has gotten a cult classic status in 4 years (I don't wanna say 'before it even released' because seeing early access pretty much negates that)
I remember the first time playing this was when it first ever came out, it was a free demo and it had was earth. There was no orbiting or anything in it so the whole goal of it was to just see how far away from earth you could get with the 1 solid fuel and 1 liquid fuel engines you available.
I'm really glad this game got successful, learning to play it actually gives you an idea how orbiting and gravity works in real life and is pretty fascinating.
Let us Celebrate!

If you're into spaceflight, space exploration or just shitting around with explosive vehicles in a fun physics sandbox that doesn't take itself too seriously you must own this game. I bought in when it was at version 0.17 and I never regretted it. Wonderful little game. And it's nice to see it move out of Early Access.
I just wish they'd add some more fucking planets already. I simply ran out of interesting places to go four or five patches ago.
Remember not too long back where they said they were adding Multiplayer in as well, although I suspect that was possibly just a smokescreen since they scrapped resources at the same time too.
I remember when the game didn't have symmetry in the VAB.

I didn't even make that comparison lmao, why even jump to that conclusion?
Yeah they did a lot of work, but after all these years it seems they're running out of steam, is what I'm saying:
i love this game like no other game, but it's still full of bugs and they haven't ever optimized it, which is a shame. game runs like shit and crashes are abundant and good luck running more than a few mods without reaching the RAM ceiling and crashing to desktop
and they're leaving beta after one version. literally one version
it was 0.1-0.25 (alpha) -> 0.90 (beta!!) -> 1.0 (release)
what the hell, they said beta was for adding planned content. did they add it all in one version? (no)
the development of this game mightve been better than most early access games, but it sure as fuck wasn't flawless. lots of misdirection, too.
i'm curious to see what 1.0 will do to the team. i honestly hope they don't slow down and end development after, as much as i think it's likely.
RAM ceiling isn't Squad's fault it's the fault of 64 bit unity not being stable enough for their game so we're stuck with 32 bit. It is also the fault of your mods for using such high quality textures. The only part that is squads fault is that they decided that the best course of action was to load everything into RAM instead of just loading parts when they were needed.
Overtime like every NASA project. (And hopefully not overbudget)
snip
The person that's doing the refueling etc stuff is RoverDude, the person behind karbonite, so it's most likely karbonite going stock.

Funny thing is that the 64 bit version is only unstable on windows. On linux it's rock stable.

I think the reason it took off was more or less the unforgiving challenge of it. Mod's drove it's popularity but the same could be said about almost any PC game that has had mod support.
It's a very unique game and challenging at that, that is why it took off.
