I'm a Screenwriter! A really, really new Screenwriter.

What is screen writing?

We make the scripts that the actors intentionally ignore to seem more important. We're usually the people who make the initial concept and original script, or edit the original and make changes based on what studios want. It doesn't pay much and the recognition for its minimal.
Why do you want to do that!?
Because Writing.
On a more serious note, I don't know. I love being able to write out an entire moving to hide messages and little clues inside that maybe even the director and writing people would miss. Just a note, I'm entirely new to this, don't even have an agent.
What if I want to get into screen writing?
First, download Celtx. Its free and autoformats for you. Its very easy to get into screen writing and on some level, a lot easier than say writing short stories or books. What makes it harder is that there are specific format rules like programming. For instance, action lines that go from edge to edge, are to never exceed 3 lines. You can have as many as you want, but don't go past 3 lines. Never mark anything down as Dawn or Dusk because they're interchangeable. Only write Night or Day, you can describe the dawn/dusk within the action text. It also all must be down in present tense, no past tense unless its a short description of the character.
Well Mr.Fancy Pants, what have you written?
Good question. I'm currently working on two scripts, The Angry Weatherman and My Burning Heart, both of which tackle different ideas that I have rolling around in my head. My first script is a 72, sci-fi, modern horror thriller...thing. Its called Test Subject and I never did corrections or went through to rewrite it because, its your first script, I don't think I could ever make it good.
Why not?
Your original projects in any creative field are always shite.
Let me be the judge!
Here's the .pdf.
Here's the celtx file itself for anyone who wants it.
Any special mentions?
Yeah, mainly to [Seed Eater], I don't know if he jumps around Facepunch anymore but I owe him the script which I promised to let him read since he seemed interested. Sorry about that dude.
Is that all?
I was kinda hoping to get other people involved, see if we could make this the screen writing thread for people looking for feedback on any sort of screenplay they've done. I know I'd definitely need it. For those writers out there, just remember, this is your work, criticism is great but what you feel is right for the story is more important. Unless its shite like mine, then go ahead and take everything.
Thanks for reading!
I have millions of crazy and bizarre ideas for movies, but I can never motivate myself to write anything
Hello fellow screen writer.
I'm going to be graduating in a couple of months and moving on to film. Just wanted say best of luck to you and I hope I see you around the wonderful world that is the entertainment industry.
I hope they're not as terribly wrote as the majority of your posts

yeah no, that's the big problem with people new to any sort of creative field
you gotta be able to kill your baby, and it seems like you don't know how to do that yet
[editline]11th November 2013[/editline]
also oh god im sorry, but this is bad
the screenplay doesn't direct
you are directing in the screen play
the screenwriter doesn't choose the set dressings, nor does he choose the costuming, nor does he need to describe the room in so much detail.
you can describe the actions that take place, but you don't need to say that he picks up two books and name those books
[editline]11th November 2013[/editline]
also this is more general advice, if you really want to go pro, you can't use celtx, final draft is basically the only accepted option (it formats slightly differently)

That's why I said I'd probably never go back to working on it because it was literally filled with problems and issues.
Although with the set up and detail, it seems there seems to be several different styles. But within the professional world, yeah, you don't go into detail. Also, I'm going to be honest, why the fuck does it matter what program you use to write a script?
what's the point of writting screenplays if you don't have anyone to film them?
For fun? For screenwriters now, you usually submit your screenplay to be bought. A lot are never made but studios like to hold onto the rights of them.
Its not a very substantial job so you usually will have to screen write on the side. Unless you want to Tarantino it.
why the fuck does it matter what program you use to write a script?
because it formats differently, and thats the standard
because it formats differently, and thats the standard
Ah, okay.
Ah, okay.
also because FDP has become an industry standard. it has reports and shit that lets the director know how many filming locations they'll need, how many instances of profanity (by word) are in the script, where they are and who says them
Ah, so its just all around better for everyone involved.
what's the point of writting screenplays if you don't have anyone to film them?
Money. Write a decent script, and a studio might purchase it and make it into a film. Or have a different writer rape it first, and then make it into a movie (for better or worse). Hell, if you got enough motivation, make it yourself.
[editline]11th November 2013[/editline]
Also, is it possible to discuss screenplays that we may or may not be currently working on?
oh another tip, if someone says "hey wanna write a video game", say no
issue 1: game studios don't outsource writers
issue 2: you will learn to hate excel (you have to write incidental dialog in excel spreadsheets)
Oh yeah. I know.
I also created the thread to help other new writers get some feedback.
Can't even get the installer to work. In fact, it freezes my explorer.
Might just be Windows 8 though

Ooooor now it works. Just took 5 minutes to start.
I know you said your script was shit, but you really should take it down, or at least put one of your newer, better scripts up. Because right now the only indicator of your work is that script and...
Sorry but it's really horrible.

And do you have something to show off? To bring in something new to discuss?

I'm not saying he can't do better, every scriptwriter has a shitty first script, I wrote mine just to get it out of the way because I knew it would be shit. He should just post one of his new scripts, thats all I'm saying.
Huh, just read your first script.
First saying I have NO clue how a movie script should look like, so I can't say if it's a good script.
And sure there's some grammatical errors here and there, but I found the story to be quite an interesting read.
Was even a bit disappointing to find it unfinished.
I'm not into writing / storytelling though so maybe I miss a lot of pointers that others see, but to me,
the story was entertaining to read, even if I put a few question-marks here and there.
slightly-on-topic: Is it question-marks or question marks?
Chrome just suggested question-marks.
I'm starting my career as an indie game designer. I've been in howard hughes mode -- My beard's about an inch and a half long atm, and my eyes seem to be sinking in a bit -- writing up a GDD, so I feel your pain. The document is written so that fellow team members are without question in regards to features and such -- however, some things can be left open ended, and are meant to be deliberated upon at which point the document will be amended.
I've had the luck of convincing a software engineer as engines and AI, 2D artist as concept art and texture art, 3D artist to join the project at the moment. Of course there's me as Designer, Co-ordinator, light art, junior programmer and a few other things. I've been truly fortunate, and this might actually pan out.

either. Use query or eroteme to avoid that :v:
I can edit your movies
What about we use 3D animations to bring them into reality?
We got lots of 3D modellers/rippers here in Facepunch, and maybe some animators too
I actually write a few scripts but they're just little projects ill get going one day, i did try using scripts to push out a few videos on my youtube page you can check out if you want, it definitely sped up the process but i suck at planning
include as many instances of people getting punched in the face in your scripts as possible
Screenwriter/writer here too :)
It's been a dream ever since I saw The Departed when I was 11...now I'm 18 and I keep making up ideas for movies, short films, stories, books, whatever! I hope to get some good education in screenwriting and directing, mayhaps in Denmark!
All the best to you man!

They're on hold because group projects/school are taking precedence.

This script had a lot of no-nos in it. For instance the ending, is actually the ending, there is no happy ending or sad ending. Its basically, he's trapped inside his own little power fantasy.
I tried to write a script once, but I decided that I'm not that good at writing.
i opened Celtx, took a shit on my keyboard, and now i'm a screenwriter just like OP!
