t I was playing an MMO (ARPG) today and they can be kind of time consuming. I enjoy playing this game, and I feel it is fun. However, someone said something to me that sort of struck a chord. "You could be out learning a new skill, meeting people, making friends, but instead you're here on this game."
Am I wasting my life? I'm not even an adult yet and I feel I have to go out and make money and prepare for my future and things such as that. I have all A's, I'm relatively intelligent, and I'm sociable. Am I wasting my time if I enjoy it? I feel it's hard to enjoy it now that someone has said that to me..
Very confused. Not sure whether to just drop them.. or go learn things. There is a lot I could learn about, but there is a lot of fun to be had playing videogames.
I'm 14, so due to my age, location and type of school, it's hard to meet new people.
However I study more strictly and go to the gym, as I had noticed that computer games were my main activity.
I think it isn't a waste of time as long as you do other stuff.
I guess I can't be expecting to constantly be learning things everyday, the computer is my main leisure activity as well. I'm only 17, so I don't have much to do. I've finished college apps, gotten good grades, etc. I could alter my ways and manage my time more efficiently.
I think it all depends on you're opinion of "wasting time". If your idea of not wasting time is enjoying yourself and having fun, then by all means playing MMOs certainly isn't wasting time.

That's how I thought of it as well. I started thinking about how I could be bettering the world, but then I realized that everyone thinks about it. I mean I can do it, so can everyone else. Am I really wasting time if I'm enjoying it?
I don't really think so to be honest.
waste of time in the same way as watching tv or sleeping
waste of time in the same way as watching tv or sleeping
Well sleeping is vital for the body to recharge, unless you do it excessively. But you're right, I could be watching TV and it would be a waste of time. Then again I could be watching discovery, nat geo, other educational/insightful shows.
It's not a waste if you enjoy it. Don't you feel it would be more wasteful if you did meet new people, getting out and doing stuff etc, and didn't enjoy it at all?
If you're not enjoying what you're doing, then I'm not sure why you're doing it.
waste of time in the same way as watching tv or sleeping
I wouldn't compare sleep to this.
No, it's a hobby. If you have nothing else to do, or need to relive stress, video games are a good way to do it.
Yes.
For me, at least.
I never actually have time to play them, but I play them anyways.
Hence them wasting my time.
Playing video games alone is a waste of time. Just like watching a movie alone is a waste of time. I'd much rather do something with at least one other person (Who is physically there or I actually know them in real life) than with a bunch of anonymous people all over the country or watch a movie on netflix in the corner of my room.
But doing that stuff with other people you like isn't a waste of time.

Well I mean goofing off with friends could technically be considered a waste of time too if you aren't doing anything productive. We could all dedicate out time to learning.. but it's not as enjoyable because it's not what we want to do at the moment.

What about single-player games? Is it only worthwhile for you if someone is watching on the couch next to you? Is the experience given by engaging yourself in the storyline of a videogame or movie, or any artform for that matter, a waste of time if you can't share that experience with someone else?
I am a pretty introverted person, so the notion that spending time alone is a waste of time is ridiculous to me.
Sometimes I think playing games are a waste of time, but then I realise everything else that I do or could possibly do is pointless and is a waste of time too.
So just don't think about it and do whatever you enjoy doing.
it's a form of entertainment, now you decide if it's a waste or not

That's a shitload of self-motivation for a 14 year old!
Congrats dude =D
If they provide inspiration for something else - no. But only if you act on that inspiration.

To be honest, I think it is just as rewarding meeting new people though the internet too (response to Mrs. Moon). I've met 6 people from Canada and they're very good friends of mine.
I'm an introvert as well, but I also like to socialize.
I find that when I play a game all day I feel as though it's been a waste of time
But as an activity to get engrossed in every so often I love it. Especially if the game I'm playing has a plot that engages me or a multiplayer that entertains
It's a time waster if anything, If I'm stressed out or just bored I start playing a game and have fun.
this is the wrong forum to ask this

That's what I was thinking at first, but I'm getting some insightful answers and it's helping me.
If the only thing you do in your spare time is play video games, it might be considered a waste of time. If you play an hour or two a day it's pretty much the same as watching an hour or two of TV a day.

And there's your answer, thread over.

That's true, thank you. If I enjoy doing something, I should do it. Hey, maybe I can make it more productive by creating videos and stuff.
I think it depends on what you're playing.
I would compare playing most games to reading a book, or watching a movie. Neither of those two things have ever been seen as wastes of time.
Even more pointless games, that could never be compared to reading a book, could be like hanging out with friends. You're having fun.
You (and the majority) will likely not have accomplished anything important when you die, so everything is a waste of time
Waste it as you please
You (and the majority) will likely not have accomplished anything when you die, so everything is a waste of time

You're a very positive person.
It all just depends on your own perception. There is no defining answer to whether it is or isn't a waste of time.
If you enjoy it and don't let it get in the way of any of your other priorities, then it isn't a waste of time. But if you don't enjoy it, or let it get in the way of other priorities, then it obviously will be.....
You (and the majority) will likely not have accomplished anything when you die, so everything is a waste of time

People accomplish many things in their lives. Just because some things aren't accomplishments that make them famous or anything, doesn't make it a waste of time. If you think certain things are a waste of time, then to you they are, but to someone else they won't be. Everything is subjective.
