After a lengthy debate, the Senate voted to get rid of the price on carbon, with 39 senators voting for and 32 voting against. This was the Government's third attempt to scrap the tax since the election - the first two were rejected by the Senate. The legislation passed with the support of all of the micro-party crossbench, dominated by the Palmer United Party.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-28339663
Australia's Senate has voted to repeal the carbon tax, a levy on the 300 biggest polluters passed by the Labor Party when they were in power in 2011. Prime Minister Tony Abbott, whose Liberal coalition beat Labor in an election last year, had made the repeal a central aim of his government. Politicians have been locked in a fierce row about the tax for years. Labor says it helps to combat climate change, but the Liberals claim it penalises legitimate businesses.
Oh for fucks sake.
I've really never understood this debate or the carbon tax but Tony Abbott's plan to pay companies to stop polluting is such a dreadful idea [editline]17th July 2014[/editline] Young libs is so embarrassing

Yeah a large portion of Australia is anti carbon tax and anti boats because of the media. There is a reason Abbott was voted in, I really hope enough people come to their senses by the next election.

I eagerly await the massive, ineffective waste of money the governments Direct Action policy will be as compared to the Carbon tax/ETS [editline]17th July 2014[/editline] It comes with a rating "0/10 no economist recommends"

All I can say is that I am very disappointed with this decision.
I can only hope that the next election is a good one. And that someone manages to weed Murdoch out of Australian media within the decade.
Can't wait for their 'Green Army' to plant trees.
