COMPUTERS may be producing a "generation of weaklings" as kids swap outdoor play for screen games and the internet, research has suggested. A study of ten-year-olds found that the number of sit-ups they could do dropped nearly 30 per cent between 1998 and 2008. And while only one in 20 kids failed to hold their own weight hanging on wall bars in 1998, the number doubled to one in ten by 2008. The Essex University survey also found that as kids followed fewer traditional activities, such as tree-climbing, their arm strength dropped 26 per cent - and their grip seven per cent. Children's fitness expert Dr Gavin Sandercock, who led the study, said: "Typically, these activities boosted children's strength, making them able to lift and hold their own weight."
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3595191/Kids-get-weaker-on-PCs.html?OTC-RSS&ATTR=News
Isn't the sun some tabloid that wasn't trusted?
so kids who did less exercise have less physical strength what a fucking discovery sun, wow
This is the premise of evolution. As we grow more and more advanced we need less body strength to survive.
Apparently I'm a professor now, because I knew of this shit 10 years ago.
The sun is the Fox News of the UK. No?
Was expecting a ridiculous mac commercial to laugh at. Was disappointed.
I always did a balance of violence outdoors and played violent games indoors when i was 10. Perfect balance.
I'm not sure, i get thesame exercise as 10 years before, only this time to take the bike to all the old people, who claim we've gone backwards, to fix their computers.
Ill argue against it... Let me do this one pushup, Ive been trying at it for eight years.
The sun is the Fox News of the UK. No?
Yep. Everyone only gets it for the picture of a naked chick that comes with every issue.
the sun hasn't seen the fitness section of facepunch :V
Kids get weaker sitting 6 to 9 hours a day in classrooms. Also The Sun. [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline] Wait wait, let me try that again.
"Kids get weaker in classrooms" "SCHOOLS may be producing a "generation of weaklings" as kids swap outdoor play for knowledge, research has suggested. meanwhile Fox News and the Sun are working on the next generation of dumblings
This is the premise of evolution. As we grow more and more advanced we need less body strength to survive.
~The premise of evolution~ 6 year olds playing counter strike online and sucking down mcdonalds thickshakes. Unf yeah we don't need that stupid body
i am an obvious exception with my grotesque strength at the moment my 1RM for my bench is 210, and my squat is somewhere over 300 (that's not very good) It's really not that difficult to hit the gyms. You just need to talk to some people who know what they're doing, learn the form, and.. work out. I do it because it feels good. I always love that feeling after lifting a lot of reps.
Yep. Everyone only gets it for the picture of a naked chick that comes with every issue.
That is why you should not look at the sun, especially page 3.
I can't even do one sit up.
Kids get weaker sitting 6 to 9 hours a day in classrooms. Also The Sun.
but but but PE makes it ok because you stand up and are told to run in circles by angry people who have easily 200+ pounds on you and couldn't do a push-up themselves, let alone 25 in a row, and that makes it ok for them to boss you around and it also makes schools ok because 5 hours of exercise a week is all kids need right :downs:
blame the parents.
If they don't want kids to play video games, then give them a assault rifle, loads of ammo, make him/her kill shitloads of people, run from the cops and repeat and they will stay in shape
Don't need strength to survive. [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline]
This is the premise of evolution. As we grow more and more advanced we need less body strength to survive.
That's not how evolution works, things mutate (not caused by the environment, the mutations are perfectly random) and, by chance, become more suited to the environment, have a lower mortality rate than the normals, breed with them, and eventually the un-mutated ones are wiped out, replaced by a species better suited to the environment.
This is the premise of evolution. As we grow more and more advanced we need less body strength to survive.
We'll see about that. Though this article has a point, and so do you, thinking of a technological-smartass-brainworm needing no other bodily functions but thinking, eh? maybe in the far future :v: but human body is very important to us, in the end it's all you got
meanwhile Fox News and the Sun are working on the next generation of dumblings
id say they're doing a good job of it

I didn't realise the sun was this bad.
This is the premise of evolution. As we grow more and more advanced we need less body strength to survive.
How about we be advanced AND strong? Get off the chair and do some situps.
You know in nature it's all about the survival of the fittest, the weakest dying off and the strongest surviving. But how it is today then with us? The "weaker," as in the people sitting on their asses, they are not concerned about survival, and they shouldn't even be! I think that might just be the problem, in some of my twisted opinion. People gotta start putting their lives on the line! Yeah!
And this week in the fucking obvious news section. While the sun is a shitty newspaper and this isn't overly surprising, it is slightly worrying that an entire generation is becoming lazy and unfit.
The sun is the Fox News of the UK. No?
there's always boobs on page three so i'm happy
