My dad said that in Cuba when the Communists took over and that when the American's came back to help take the communists out, that all the citizens rebelled against them. And that the reason was because the Communists built tons of houses and gave each person a key to one of the buildings, with the only thing in exchange being that they give it to their children when they pass.
Also my Dad said with Communism, that the amount of pay was equal. So if you were a Doctor who did Surgery, you'd get the same pay as someone cleaning the streets.
Is this true?
Yes. Each person has a role to fill and each person who worked - which was everyone since work was required - was paid equal. Since Cuba followed the Lenin-Marxist model, people with more advanced jobs would get the same pay, however, they would get greater benefits such as housing, food, healthcare, etc.
Yeah, so striving to go for something higher was worthless since you could get paid the same amount being a street cleaner or a garbage caretaker

Unfortunately my Cuban history is pretty rusty, but
the US never actually came to Cuba so the citizens couldn't rebel. American armed and funded Cuban exiles attempted to land at Cuba and assassinate Castro, but it was a failed attempt and they were taken out.
Communism was immensely popular for a time in Cuba, because people were actually getting a decent quality of life when compared to US-backed dictator Batista. I'm not sure about the housing thing, but under most "communist states" free or cheap housing was common.
As far as being paid the same, no communist country ever had anyone paid the same. Higher skills were still paid higher, even if on paper they were "paid equal", doctors still lived in nicer houses with fancier cars and received massive bonuses and street cleaners still lived in poorer housing with little to no bonuses.

This doesn't really make sense, because if you're getting paid the same anyhow, why would you go for the hardest-working unskilled jobs versus the skilled jobs that were less demanding? It's like saying "because everyone gets paid the same I want to get fucked in the ass all day and clean peoples toilets with my mouth instead of becoming an educator or IT specialist through the free education."
