After originally being revealed back at the Steam Dev Days conference in January 2014, Valve have finally elaborated on the wide selection of international currencies coming to Steam in the near future. In a new post to the Steamworks community group, it has been announced 12 new currencies will be added to the Steam Store alongside the recently introduced Yen, which was added back in late August. The full list of upcoming and recently released international currencies is as follows: Japanese Yen (JPY) – Released on 8/19/2014 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) – Expected to release mid-September Malaysian Ringit (MYR) – Expected to release mid-September Philippine Peso (PHP) – Expected to release mid-September Singapore Dollar (SGD) – Expected to release mid-September Thai Baht (THB) – Expected to release mid-September Australian Dollar (AUD) – Expected to release mid-September New Zealand Dollar (NZD) – Expected to release mid-September Canadian Dollar (CAD) – Expected to release early-October Norwegian Krone (NOK) – Expected to release early-October South Korean Won (KRW) – Expected to release late-October Turkish Lira (TRY) – Expected to release late-October Mexican Peso (MXN) – Expected to release late-October This is definitely good news for any Steam users living in the affected countries, as Steam should no longer default to foreign currencies (such as the United States Dollar, the Euro, or the Great British Pound), making it far easier to work out how much a product on the storefront is worth in local currency. The announcement page, available to anyone with a Steamworks account, also includes important information game developers should definitely check out, including how to ensure your product is available for purchase in the listed regions and how to modify in-game micro-transactions to reflect these new, upcoming changes. Why do I get the feeling this is going to be used to inflate prices further for Australians and other countries?
Whoo, NZD! Now I'll be able to be ripped off in my own currency
This would also mean less fluctuation in final prices for those countries right? Instead of having to calculate the price based on a fluctuating exchange rate I mean
This explains why the Dota 2 store is doing a similar thing soon I guess
This would also mean less fluctuation in final prices for those countries right? Beyond Earth: USD $50, AU $90 Yeah, I'm absolutely certain they go off of exchange rates.
I wonder what will happen to pre existing wallet balances then.
About time they introduced the AUD, sick and tired of needing to convert the USD amount
Now do something about the Australia tax. With Steam being the biggest digital distribution platform out there, they need to set an example. A lot of other platforms are doing a better job than Valve for making it fair for consumers.
Norwegian Krone (NOK) – Expected to release early-October
You're paying at your main currency. It's cheaper this way and it works out much better then paying a small fee to change your AUD to USD (this happens in NZ and im fucking grateful this change is coming) also lets users actually pay actual amounts rather then converting USD to their currency which gives off less confusion Good move Volvo.
Actually, were I to pay 60$+tax instead of 60€ for a digital copy, I'd still save up 11€. Hence why I buy digital copies off of Amazon and pay in dollars. [editline]4th September 2014[/editline] and to hell with your 1:1 $:€ rate. [editline]4th September 2014[/editline] it works for every purchase above 5$, and more often than not when something is on sale on steam it is on sale on amazon too.
You introduce Norwegian money but not Swedish money? wtf steam not cool.
No bitcoin or gold 0/10
Still no Swiss francs. :/
No bitcoin or gold 0/10
I knew it was just a matter of time before someone brings up bitcoins.
You introduce Norwegian money but not Swedish money? wtf steam not cool.
Norwegians are worth more then us lowly swedes. At least their currency is.
I wonder if the currency here will be introduced
is this going to affect the steam market for australians in any way?
I half expected it to be more stuff like trading cards with the title. I've gotten used to hearing about hats are worth more than the entire economy of Greece. Still, good for Steam, now we can only hope that publishers understand 1 USD =/= 1 Europoor diddilydoo
You introduce Norwegian money but not Swedish money? wtf steam not cool.
for the better they gonna rip us scandinavians off good
i wish we could still buy our games in usd
Indo Rupiah Yay
I'm kinda suspecting that this won't be good for our wallets at all.
Now what about the Steam Wallet?
Secretly hoping Steam glitches so that a 60 euro game will cost 60 NOK (7 euros)
About time they introduced the AUD, sick and tired of needing to convert the USD amount
But before we could buy games when the AUD was high for cheaper amounts. Now it's going to have a fixed price which is going to be higher.
Bet they're still going to charge us way more than the regular price.
Went very smooth here in Brazil when they introduced BRL (R$) as an available currency. But that really depends on the owner of the franchise being distributed on steam. Most are either cheaper or 1:1 price, with the exception of a few companies like Activision.
For any Australians, get a Citibank Plus Account: http://www.citibank.com.au/aus/banking/everyday_banking/citibank_plus.htm No fees for foreign transactions. No fees for anything really. Also, Visa's exchange rate, rather than one set by the bank. Also, if you're with NAB, you'll still be charged a foreign transaction fee because the transaction is still happening overseas, even though its in AUD.
when are they going to fix the 1 eur:1 dollar problem though
If they use it as an excuse to increase the price of games in Canada I will me mad as heck.
