This just shows how amazingly diverse the U.S. phone system was near the end of the mechanical switching age. ESS, which Evan Doorbell mentions in the middle of the tape, is a completely electronic (i.e, no mechanical switching) phone system, which is a precursor to the totally digital system used today. All of the other sounds are generated by electromechanical devices, and it sounds very, very cool.
The website this is from is http://www.phonetrips.com/ . There are a lot of cool things there, I recommend checking out at least the two 'Network Sounds of the 70's' tapes.
I've been watching too many prank calls, I was awaiting for someone to pick up after every ring.
This video is so exciting.
Cool find :3
