This thread is for any information regarding pens (but mainly fountain pen). Post your thoughts reviews and recommendation! This is a work in process I plan to add Inks, felt tip pens,Calligraphy styles and more fountain pens!

Ballpoint Pen Uses a roller-ball at the tip whereby viscous ink rolls out along the each pen stroke. Invented around the 1888 and is now the most widely used writing instrument in the world due to its cheap production and ease of use. Good Ballpoint pens (pens are up to the beholder and these pens are only my opinion) Pilot Hi-tec C: An amazing ball point pen comes in 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5mm writes incredibly smooth (although the 0.3 can be a bit scratchy at times) and has a vivid black, although the ink runs out quickly for their replicable series although the ink in their disposable ones are fine for about 1- 2.5 months of heavy writing. They come in a variety of colours and all colours are extremely bright and deep. Pental Slicci This pen comes in 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.7 ballpoint sizes. Writes smooth and with a shiny black gel ink and has a large ink capacity. It is basically Pentals Hi Tec C but I feel it’s much smoother and last a bit longer than the pilot one. It comes in a variety of Colours. Pilot BPS An incredibly widely used pen comes in 2 sizes Fine (0.7) and Medium (1.0). A reliable pen with a huge stock of ink that last a 3-4 months. Ink is mediocre some can sometimes come out inconsistently and not completely smooth, although this only happens in after a while of usage.

Fountain Pens A fountain pen has a metal tip (nib) which holds the ink back as you write the slight pressure open the nib and through gravity (and through the capillary effect which pulls more ink through the nib) the ink flows through. The more pressure you place the thicker the line (it is also dependent on the nib size) as your open the tip more. Fountain pen unlike ballpoint uses fluid ink which creates a much more rich colour (dependent on the ink also) and also binds to the paper better. All fountain pens are refillable through the use of a converter which is usually a vacuum screw tube which draws the ink into the tube. The nib can be made from different material but gold is usually the choice of metal as it is softer which allows more control. Nibs can come in anywhere from 12k to 24k gold and metals ranging from steel, Rhodium, platinum and silver. Each metal gives a different feeling as a hard metal bends a lot less and a less refined gold also merits the same result. Good Fountain Pen This will contain some good cheap starter fountain pens and also some mid - top range fountain pens I had experience with. Different countries produce a different size of nibs e.g. A European fine is the roughly the same size as a Japanese Fine. Nibs can be found mainly in 3 main sizes: Fine, Medium and Broad, although other sizes and nibs can be found e.g. medium-fine, extra fine etc. There are also more exotic nibs mainly found with Japanese producers e.g. Music, Dual or even triple stacked nib. Pens beyond the range of around ~150 – 350 has diminishing returns as some pens in the range of 160 writes as well as a high end pen but that is on the eye of the beholder again. Lamy Safari This pen for its price range is extremely good and is a brilliant start for any person who wants to have a try into fountain pens. The steel nib is nothing to go crazy about but for its price range is very good. Writing is quite good with a right amount of wetness although due to its construction the balance for me is a bit off and for anyone moving from a ballpoint to this don’t be decived by the medium nib as it does run thick. ALWAYS TRY BEFORE YOU BUY! Pilot Vanishing Point This pen is a worldwide, highly regarded fountain pen. It has a retractable nib which is crazy compared to the normal design of any other fountain pen. With its 14k gold nib and its price being quite reasonable it’s really a god send of fountain pens as its build is incredibly solid, writes incredibly smooth and its sleek design it really is my top pen in that price range. This can be a good starter fountain pen as its design is like a fat rollerpoint pen and handling it feel incredibly natural. Sailor 1911M/ Sailor 1911 profit My personal everyday usage pen, writes incredibly smooth (cannot emphasize this enough) and has a really nice ink dispersion (wetness). It carries a really amazingly crafted 14k gold nib (can be found with 21k) which is incased in a resin body and cap with gold accents. This pen has a relatively small capacity for in my opinion in comparison with my other pens it runs out of ink relatively quickly. Can be found relatively cheap and is a great mid range pen. Pelikan Tradition M200 An amazingly elegant pen with a smooth writing experience has a generous flow of ink (maybe even too much for my taste) which means less chance of the pen not dispensing ink after prolonged time of non-use. The nib can be found with a dual tone design which is amazing to look at and is has a nice stiffness to it due to its steel construction with gold accents. Has a large reservoir of ink but can run out quick if you write with a large amount of force. A medium nib in my opinion is quite large (as with a lot of European pens) in comparison with Japanese fountain pens. It is a mid- high range pen but it is quite good for its price. Nibs I decided to add this just to show you that there aren’t just the normal nibs out there for writing these nibs may serve different purposes and it is really up to the users. Music [img_thumb]http://platinumpenusa.com/wp-content/uploads/music-nib.jpg[/img_thumb] Cobra Copperplate [img_thumb] http://www.paperpenalia.com/images/offsetintro.gif[/img_thumb]

I decided to add this section just for the sake of showing these crazy things off Amazing/Crazy fountain pens Mainly only S.t. Dupont makes this level of fountain pen and some of them are just jaw dropping amazing. St Dupont Samurai Valued at around $66,000 it has a white gold laced and accents every where it takes hours of chiseling to get the fine details along the finger rest. Comes with marble stand, a steel letter opener, a white gold accented lighter and a bottle of ink. There are only 20 of these in the world. St Dupont Zodiac Gold craftsmanship everywhere, Bling bling! Comes with gold plated ashtray and gold laced lighter. Only 33 of them in the world. St dupont Apocalypse Holy what the fudge that’s a pen? MORE TO COME

Inks Inks come in the range of colours and variety each with its own characteristic. European/american inks tends to be more darker or richer, that is not to say Japanese inks are bad they usually have a really nice shine to it and also usually have some technology where it does not rub out or fade out over time. What makes a good ink is a combination of a rich dark colour, good flow, shine, its resistance to rubbing out and it’s time to dry. Inks usually come in 50ml bottles but can come in 70ml, 100ml and other irregular sizes. Another thing to look for is the bottle design as a good bottle design allows you to draw even the last drop of ink. I pretty much exclusively use Uni-Ball Eye for uni. Not cheap pens (AUS$20 for 4) and they are a real target for theft. I pretty much have to ask for them back from people when they borrow them
I prefer these Uni-Ball pens. Above beat me to it, goddamnit. How can I get ninja'd on a personal preference of a fucking ink pen

Can left handed people use fountain pens? They look so nice.
Can left handed people use fountain pens? They look so nice.
Yes they are ambidextrous if you want to start i generally point at the Lamy safari or a Pilot Knight. Although you can always aim to get a vanishing point but I rather not recommend something of that price where you may not like.
I have a really fucking weird way of holding writing utensils, so it's hard for me to find comfortable pens. So pen wizard, is there any sort of nice but affordable pen that I can find that won't burn my hands after 10 minutes?
that's a really common way to hold a pen what are you on about?
I have a really fucking weird way of holding writing utensils, so it's hard for me to find comfortable pens. So pen wizard, is there any sort of nice but affordable pen that I can find that won't burn my hands after 10 minutes?
You hold the pen the same way I do (in the past) for me the most comfortable pen was the lamy safari because it was long enough with enough balance (with the cap) on the back end and also nice placement of a finger rest, although this pen is a fountain pen. For me before I discovered fountain pen I generally used the Pilot BS-P for really extended amount of time some reason i never really felt fatigue. You can also get some small cushioning around where you hold the pen to stop your thumb pressing so hard against your pen which eases the nerve that actually gets the pain you get after writing along time. Although its hard to say which pen fits comfortably from person to person
As for a damn good ballpoint pen. One of my favorites is The Zebra F-301 It's a .7mm ballpoint pen that also has a gel variant. They have very sharp and clean lines, decently comfy to hold, well weighted, and durable. I bought 2 at the beginning of my fall semester and both and still working excellently. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline]
He's holding it with his ring finger, I don't know anyone that does that
I see it A LOT.
Is it bad I hold the pen below the grip, like near the end?
Is it bad I hold the pen below the grip, like near the end?
No, as a lot of people do it this is because of the design of the ballpoint pen which In my honest opinion boost a bad habit. As most people including myself from time to time puts too much pressure on the thumb which causes pain along the median nerve which does cause carpal tunnel syndrome. That was also one of the reason why I relearned running writing with a fountain pen as it is much more relaxed and fluid.
This thread feels too high-class for me. Anyways, I hold pens weirdly. I see other people put their thumb ontop of their index finger while holding a pen, while I just hold on to it with the flat side of my thumb, index and middle finger. When I try to do the way everyone else does it feels uncomfortable as hell and I write worse. What do pen wizards?
my penis big
Okay, Legitimate question. I have Dyspraxia, my Hand-eye is shot. I've tried with simple ballpoints and such but my work always comes out, crowded. As in the words ARE readable, but the thickness of the ink stops it from being legible. Should I go out and buy a few fountain pens to see if they do anything for me?
[t]http://i.imgur.com/tYYLY6Q.jpg[/t] Coincidentally I need to buy some pens tomorrow
I had something like that. They're cheap, like 50 cents or something, and good. I drew this with it: [img_thumb]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/234/c/1/malamute_pen_sketch_finished_by_daniel_bolstad-d5c3ggv.jpg[/img_thumb] No reference and no pencil sketch, so the great thing with this pen is that I can make nearly invisible lines to sketch, instead of having a blotch of ink drop whenever the pen touches the paper. It lets me create a much more nice drawing without making mistakes.

[t]http://img.alibaba.com/photo/402023923/Parker_fountain_pen.jpg[/t] Those Parker fountain pens are really nice, casual pens. They are fairly cheap and handle very good for their price. Their biggest drawback is their durability, they're quite fragile (like most fountain pens, anyway).

What's a good pen to write japanese in.
Exactly what is wrong with it? broken nib?
Yes. I was stupid and dropped it once.
What's a good pen to write japanese in.
Any Sailor/Platinum pen as they are Japanese designed just find the right nib for you (i write chinese) but if your speaking for normal ballpoint pen then I'm not quite sure
Fountain pens are not fragile if well built as they are meant to last a lifetime
If you fling an open fountain pen off a table, you can bet your ass it'll break. The nib will suffer greatly. Also, they aren't all meant to last, it very much depends of the price class. The above for example are as said, casual pens for everyday purposes like school, office work etc.
If you fling an open fountain pen off a table, you can bet your ass it'll break.
It solely depends on how the nib is stuck onto the pen some pens are really cheaply stuck one while other are even soldered or even better some are inlaid into the pen ADDED VIDEO

Also Mount Blanc pens are really cash.
