• Do video games make you racist? Study suggests playing as a black character can make you more racist

From Grand Theft Auto V to Saints Row 2 and Fight Night, many games let players choose between characters of different races. However, researchers have found that when white people play as black characters in video games classified as violent, the players were more threatening, offensive and racist in real life. Psychologist Professor Brad Bushman, of Ohio State University, said it raises the troubling impact violent video games can have on players.
During tests, 126 white university students, 60 per cent of whom were male, played Saints Row 2 after being randomly assigned to either a black or white avatar. Afterwards, those given the goal of breaking out of a prison as the black man showed stronger explicit negative attitudes towards black people than others who played as a white person. For example, they were more likely to agree with the statement 'it is really a matter of some people not trying hard enough; if blacks would only try harder they could be just as well off as whites.' A test designed to reveal unconscious bias also found black avatar players were more likely to link a black face to bad words like ‘terrible’, ‘horrible’ and ‘evil’ than good ones such as ‘joy’, ‘love’ and ‘peace’. The reverse was true for those who played as a white avatar.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2585968/Do-video-games-encourage-racism-White-people-play-black-characters-likely-express-racist-thoughts-study-finds.html
They could just already be racists and play as black characters to screw around.
'This violent stereotype may be more prevalent in video games than in any other form of media because being a black character in a video game is almost synonymous with being a violent character.'
Most characters in videogames are violent. I find that alot of videogames actively work to go against this trend and make the black character the only peaceful guy.
'It is not good to put yourself in the shoes of a murderer, as you do in many of these violent games.'
Well violence is going down. I know it the effect doesn't justify the cause but seriously.
"should daily mail articles count as news? Newly released study says fuck no, more at 11"
well I can tell you I'm a bit more racist toward peruvians and brazilians from Dota 2 I don't think they can play MOBA's for shit all I don't know if that's a racist thing to say but..
I called CJ nigger too many times. What has gta done with me.
only game ive seen that makes you racist is strictly moba games and the hatred over BRs and ruskies.
Hey, the main reason I play as Franklin in GTAV is because the right combination of clothes and haircut makes him look just like Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Not because I'm racist :(
even the comments have folks laughing at the article, which says something about it.
only game ive seen that makes you racist is strictly moba games and the hatred over BRs and ruskies.
more like most folks are already racist, and just it see as an excuse to be overtly so.
So that would explain why I'm racist towards black people after playing Prototype 2. And here I thought it was just because James Heller was a poorly written character.
help i played assassins creed freedom cry and i am joining the kkk due to it to live my dream as a person commandeering a ship full of slaves.
honestly i'd be more surprised if this wasn't daily mail
I think we need more games like The Walking Dead because it even got 4channers to stop making racist jokes for a while
idk man I always play the black character and now I say nigga and nig a lot is it racist if I say it to white people?
Hey, the main reason I play as Franklin in GTAV is because the right combination of clothes and haircut makes him look just like Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Not because I'm racist :(
franklin is probably the character i play the most peacefully as in gta5

What? Playing as a black character doesn't give you n-word privileges? Nigga please! [sp]I'm sorry. Don't hurt me.[/sp]
franklin is probably the character i play the most peacefully as in gta5
it feels kind of wrong to go on killing sprees as him. he's not a psychopath like Trevor or michael
help i played assassins creed freedom cry and i am joining the kkk due to it to live my dream as a person commandeering a ship full of slaves.
you can always do that in eve online or star trek online([sp]its actually one of ways of making loads of space cash(dilithium) in STO on the klingon side[/sp]) :v:
games feed sterotypes in general i think, like movies and books. Media in general i would say,
Well to be fair 2 of my friends played GTA V and now they sometimes call most black people they know Franklin. Either there's some truth to this or I chose to befriend a couple assholes. Or both.
I find it odd that they never state what the actual impact is on people's responses, but they do state concretely what the effect is on the individual's violent behavior. regardless, dailymail
I could have sworn there was a study that said just the opposite.
well I can tell you I'm a bit more racist toward peruvians and brazilians from Dota 2 I don't think they can play MOBA's for shit all I don't know if that's a racist thing to say but..
I don't see how that relates at all with what this article is about, you don't play as a Brazilian character in DOTA 2. [editline]21st March 2014[/editline] This is about playing as, not playing with.
games feed sterotypes in general i think, like movies and books. Media in general i would say,
There's what media tells you, but also what media doesn't tell you. Both of those things form the message, and the vicious circle of stereotypes. Let's think about what we see on TV: every time you hear about exceptional children on TV, they're caucasian... and most of the time we hear about crime, drugs, etc. it's going to be minorities. Generally speaking. But when's the last time you saw news about this on TV? But it's not because you don't/can't see something that it's not happening. The less we will let groups of people get categorized into airtight boxes, the more everyone will be able to empathize and understand each other, and that's when the vicious circle will be broken. Kinda ranty post but I hope you see what I mean.
Would be cool if the actual published article was included so we could get an actual objective look at the entirety of the professor's research, instead of being forced to look at it through the Daily Mail glasses provided.
I could have sworn there was a study that said just the opposite.
This is often the case with (psychological) research for many reasons, including unaccounted confounding factors, faulty statistics, and differences between the performed research. This is why it usually takes multiple reincarnations of the same research to actually 'prove' something (although media generally jumps on the bandwagon of 'this is now true' after one or two occurances of experimentation), given how the ability to find similar results as previous research in current research (reproducibility) is pretty much the foundation of modern science.
it feels kind of wrong to go on killing sprees as him. he's not a psychopath like Trevor or michael
Michael didn't really strike me as a psychopath, more like he tends to respond to things emotionally and gets dragged into bad situations as a result.
I always pick Redguard in the Elder Scrolls and I can clarify this article is accurate
Wow, they'll think of anything they can to go against video games, won't they? Personally, I actually tend to have MORE fun playing a black character. I remember one time I was playing on Fallout 3 and after cheating to get the right items, I ran around the Wasteland as a black Lincoln and actually managed to enjoy Fo3.
So that would explain why I'm racist towards black people after playing Prototype 2. And here I thought it was just because James Heller was a poorly written character.
Holy shit I was thinking the exact same!
Depends how the race is portrayed in the game. First mission in GTA San Andreas? Black guy steals a bike, then again that game isn't exactly a shining example of being a beckon of morality on which people can learn from (unless you want to know how to not be a busta')
