A charge of sexual battery was reduced to attempted gross sexual imposition, to which Stanley pleaded guilty. “I’d like to say with all of my heart and as humble as I possibly can, that I’m sorry,” she said in court. “I take this very seriously. This has been the hardest part of my life I’ve had to deal with because it rests on my shoulders, and I accept that.” Marion County Prosecutor Brent Yager said the offence was a crime. “Would this be different if this was a male coach and a female student? It seems like we might look more harshly on that, which we shouldn’t,” he said. “We should pursue this like we would against anybody.” Before sentencing Stanley took a psychological evaluation that is used to determine the likelihood that she would reoffend. The court was told Stanley’s evaluation was the lowest authorities had seen among sex offenders. Judge Jim Slagle told Stanley that he did not believe think she is a bad person and that her “life shouldn’t be defined by this event.” “But I think you did do a bad thing. You have to take responsibility for your offence.” She was sentenced Stanley to 15 days in jail, one year’s probation, and will have to register as a sex offender. Judge Slagle also ordered that she would not have unsupervised contact with any underage boys in the future. Stanley, who now needs to register as a sex offender, will not be allowed around underage boys without supervision.
http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/elgin-high-school-coach-martina-stanley-jailed-for-15-days-for-sex-with-17yearold/story-fnet09p2-1226958644896
Wow just 15 days?
15days is a bastardization of the legal system. Pathetic. At least she got this:
will have to register as a sex offender. Judge Slagle also ordered that she would not have unsupervised contact with any underage boys in the future.
But deserves this, plus an appropriate prison sentence.
Wow just 15 days?
And a years probation and lifetime on the sex offender registry Ffs read the article it actually like makes sense!!!
15days is a bastardization of the legal system. Pathetic. It's not like they're not autonomous or anything.
Before sentencing Stanley took a psychological evaluation that is used to determine the likelihood that she would reoffend.
“Victim joked about the incident when interviewed ... and stated he ‘was fine’ and ‘she is every schoolboy’s dream’,” said Todd Anderson.
that's not a fucking victim statutory rape law needs to go away ughh
statutory rape laws need adjustment, not to be removed. but the fact that what she is being charged of is so severe, and her sentence so light, shows a clear bastardization of the system literally everything is wrong with this case
when i opened this thread her mugshot made me jump with those soul staring wide eyes
Why would anyone deserve any longer prison sentence for completely consensual sex initiated by a 17 year old?
She is an authority figure, and in a trusted position; these actions can be perceived as abusing that authority. It's unethical behaviour.
She is an authority figure, and in a trusted position; these actions can be perceived as abusing that authority. It's unethical behaviour.
Should she be punished within the work place? Probably. But in the eyes of the law? I seriously don't think so. The 17 year old pushed for it. It's obvious that there was no abuse of authority. I don't think she should be sent to jail.
She is an authority figure, and in a trusted position; these actions can be perceived as abusing that authority. It's unethical behaviour.
Enough to get the sack and bared from working at a school? Yes. Sex offenders registry and jail time? No. He was 17.
that's not a fucking victim statutory rape law needs to go away ughh
Fucking this. What's with this country and trying to make victims out of people who are clearly not. You've literally got someone going 'I'm fine!' and the justice department going 'NO YOU'RE NOT'
Enough to get the sack and bared from working at a school? Yes. Sex offenders registry and jail time? No. He was 17.
his young and pure mind!!! he shouldnt be thinking of these things until he hits the legal age of consent!!!
That's one lucky 17 year old. In the uk you can have sex at 16, in other places such as spain its 13. - this was recently moved to 16 also. - Germany is 14 and france is 15. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Europe
She is an authority figure, and in a trusted position; these actions can be perceived as abusing that authority. It's unethical behaviour.
And to add to the point, she could have wrote him up to the dean or something for sexual harassment.
his young and pure mind!!! he shouldnt be thinking of these things until he hits the legal age of consent!!!
What's the age of consent over there? I thought 17 was well over that already?
17-year-old bragged about the sex act to friends and claimed he initiated the consensual act
Aside of this, he's past legal age of consent with an adult here as well, so from my point of view, the only thing she did wrong was misusing (or letting it happen) from her position of power, which is grounds for barring her from teaching but not a real sexual offense. She isn't a rapist, she's a shit teacher. [editline]18th June 2014[/editline] She shouldn't end up in sex offender registry and she shouldn't even face jail time. And yes, I would argue the same thing if the teacher was male. [editline]18th June 2014[/editline]
15days is a bastardization of the legal system. Pathetic. At least she got this: But deserves this, plus an appropriate prison sentence.
Yeah it's a bastardization, she got sentenced to things she definitely didn't deserve.
Hooray, it's the monthly "female teacher had sex with a male student" thread! I swear, I could set my watch by this shit if I wanted to. Honestly, I'm not too surprised that she got such short jail time. The kid is one year off from being a legal adult and he is saying he's okay with what he and the teacher did. Hell, he was practically saying it was the best thing ever with that "she's every schoolboy's dream" bit. I understand the only real thing wrong here was the fact that she was an authority figure and technically had power over him, but even that's subverted by the fact that they were both consenting to this relationship. I'd bet a million bucks if the kid was younger than sixteen, everyone would be in an outrage over this, as is the case in most of the other "female teacher had sex with a male student" threads. Oh, and the obligatory: See you all in July!
She is an authority figure, and in a trusted position; these actions can be perceived as abusing that authority. It's unethical behaviour.
This is why most states have laws that whether or not the student can legally consent, if you are a teacher you will still be in deep shit for having sex with a student. That said, I wouldn't say she needs a longer sentence. She already has to deal with the fact that she'll likely never work in public schools again (who would hire her after a background check?), in addition to the fact that her probation is most likely supervised, meaning she'll have to meet with a probation officer and pay significant costs while on probation. It's not like she's getting off that lightly.
She's not a danger to anyone, so why demand a long jail sentence?
i don't get why you guys think she should get a longer jail sentence, she isn't a rapist, the 17 year old admitted he was the one who escalated the relationship and she's been put on a sex offender register for life despite the fact that her psychological evaluation shows she is very unlikely to offend again [editline]18th June 2014[/editline] not to mention this will probably ruin her career in education and will have severe impact on her marriage/home life, she doesn't deserve her life to be run into the ground by consensual sex
What's the age of consent over there? I thought 17 was well over that already?
State by state basis, it varies pretty widely, but mostly 16. I believe it's 16 for Ohio, there's also often special conditions placed on people near the AoC so that might have something to do with it.
17 years old? That's not disturbing or sick at all, america is weird, age of conscent over here is 15 so I only see an issue with a student-teacher relationship which could cause bias on the grades, but besides that I dont see anything wrong with it.

It's funny that people find this sick when in several states (including my state) in the same country and many western nations across the world it's 100% legal.
Atleast it was consensual.
Under the age of consent + a student at the place she works = still a bad idea, regardless of whether or not he agreed to it. She had sex with somebody under the age of consent, no matter how close he is, that's still a sex offence - maybe a year of probation is a bit insane though

"every schoolboy’s dream" Each to their own I guess. I honestly think the sentence was fair, after all it wasn't an act committed with malicious intent, 2 consenting people want to bang? Let them bang.

That being said, do we have anything other than the boy's statement that this was consensual? It's not unheard of for a victim to deny the crime occurred to save face, especially when it's a teen boy being raped by a woman.
