So I'm moving into a new house with the family in around a month. I finally will have my own new room, and such. I have already planned a gaming build to build around the first week after moving. My problem is, right now I live in a 900sq ft apartment with the family, and the router is sufficient since it is at one level. The new house is like 1500sq ft and has a basement (0) first floor (1) and second floor (2). My room will be on the 2nd floor, and the PC I will be building will be there. My problem is that the "family" computer, which is actually not too bad of a machine (Quad Core and an 8800GT GPU) is going to be directly hooked up to the router which is hooked up to the modem. This is the router that I am currently using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124284 (I'm away form home right now. At least it looks like it and it was around the same price). Here is how the whole wifi set up will be: My computer is upstairs, and the router will be downstairs. Why this set up you ask, and why won't I just put the downstairs PC one level above, or put the router one level above? Well, because I would have to buy another wireless receiver for the older PC, and my mom is the boss at moving things around and decorating and shit, so I have no say in it. As you can see I have a blue wire in the diagram extending from the basement to the upstairs, connecting the router to the new computer, so I wouldn't have to worry about connection speeds, getting a new router, or a reciever. But I don't want people tripping over cords, and I'm not sure if I will be able to poke holes through ceilings and floors and what not. So Facepunch, do you have a solution for me? Like a good receiver and router combo from Newegg that would satisfy the size of the new house?
You could use a wireless relay too.
I've never heard of such a thing, but I know exactly what they do (I think) form the name. How much do they cost usually?
http://www.handymanhowto.com/2009/01/19/how-to-install-an-ethernet-jack-for-a-home-network/ It's pretty difficult with the right tools, but it basically involves, cutting a hole dropping it down cutting another hole and plugging it in. Of course it's a little more complicated than that if you want it to be pretty.
I was expecting more people to help me out with this. Am I the only one that will be living in a non-small home? It's not even big, like average/medium.
The only thing I can think of is setting up network bridges throughout your house, which I believe is what JWJ was referring to. I wish I could help you further, but I've no experience with how to do it. Perhaps you can try a site like WikiHow?
What if you buy an extremely cheap USB wifi dongle for the basement PC, then stash the router + modem somewhere on the first floor. Maybe a cupboard, closet or behind a sofa...
You should be within the range of the router, especially if you're directly above it. I'd just wait and see how things work out. If the signal ends up being too weak you can move the router to the main floor and get a wireless card for the basement pc(they're pretty cheap.) EDIT: You could also construct a parabolic reflector or a cantenna.
I would suggest speaking to the people who provide you with internet, if they are any kind of real company, they will run the line for you fo free:) If you can not or will not use the above advice, you still need a hard line. If you are anything like me, you move tons of files around your network all the time. Unless your have Wireless N, this is a ridiculous thing to do over wifi (1/10 the speed ;_;). So being connected on a hard line is 100% needed all the time no matter what. Edit: For me any way ;)
You should be fine.
Yeah I guess it won't be a sure solution until I move to the new house in a month.
I was expecting more people to help me out with this. Am I the only one that will be living in a non-small home? It's not even big, like average/medium.
If your willing to try wireless cards then find one on new egg that type N make sure the N card is the same as the wireless router and it'll work. My wireless router is 86 feet away and I have all bars. Hope this helps.
If you can, just run the ethernet cable from the router to your PC and either run it under the carpet or tape it to the edges of the wall. That way no one will trip over it.
How about this? If your new place has ethernet wires run to different places in the house, leave the modem in the place where all the wires go to (usually a box in the master bedroom closet), connect that to a splitter, which will send the data to the various parts of the house. From there, you can find a convenient location on floor 1 for the router, which should be accessible basically anywhere in the house. You can also plug your desktop right into the line that comes into the room. Of course, this is dependent on whether or not your new place has ethernet wires dropped to different rooms in the house. You can also plug the family computer in to the line that comes into the room on floor 2.
