• Rapidshare Terminates Accounts of Illegal Downloaders, Logs IPs
Although it is no secret that many people use Rapidshare to distribute copyrighted content, the site’s users have remained largely untouched until recently. Over the last few weeks, however, reports are coming in from users who’ve had their accounts terminated for downloading or uploading copyrighted files. From the emails being sent out, it is clear that Rapidshare is taking a more aggressive stance towards ‘infringing’ users. Additional information from inside Rapidshare confirms that distributers of copyrighted material are indeed targeted more that before. There is little doubt that this active termination policy is the result of ever-increasing pressure from copyright holders. At the same time, these actions might very well be the end of Rapidshare’s limitless expansion, as users will quickly move over to competing file-hosting services upon hearing this news.
Source This seems like the exact same strategy that Youtube used in its early days - be very relaxed with piracy at first, which brings a ton of growth to the company, then when the company becomes more mature, crack down on the illegal activity that they relied upon for so long. It seems pretty normal that they would remove accounts & files, but the IP logging is going to scare a lot of pirates. I think RS is going to take a steep decline in usage, though they're probably at a point where they can survive off of the amount of legit files they're serving. Site sucks balls anyway. Anyone who uses it for piracy deserves what they get Updates (Some of this was a hoax, apparently):
Update: In addition to real terminations there have been reports of scam emails. However, we have additional information which proves without a doubt that Rapidhare is indeed targeting distributors of copyrighted material more aggressively by terminating their accounts. We will publish this in the coming days. We removed the quotes from the email we posted here earlier to avoid confusion. Update: A Rapidshare spokesperson just confirmed that they are indeed terminating accounts of copyright infringers “because it violates our terms and conditions.”
So basically, Torrentfreak got tricked & quoted some spoofed e-mails, and though it is somewhat confirmed that RS policies are tightening, it is less likely that any of this is a major cause for concern (ie, IP logging report may be total bullshit).
Megaupload is ten times better
shit is this gonna happen to pirate bay?
shit is this gonna happen to pirate bay?
No. No content is actually hosted on TPB's servers; it's essentially just a search engine. However, RS actually hosts the files, so in theory they can be sued if they keep them up.
I guess the crime of not paying doesn't pay!!! xD You hear me yea?
Are the guys over at rapidshare too stupid to see what keeps their business running?

MediaFire and Megaupload are examples of good file hosting sites.
I wish people never uploaded to rapidshare, its just one of those things where there are way better alternatives Agree with everyone above
Fff, I have premium account..
site sucks balls anyway
why would people use it now ? then
How is this news? [editline]10:52AM[/editline] Wait, they're going after people who download stuff from there as well now?
I don't know why so many people use it in the first place, most of the time it said the servers are too busy or some other shit.
I don't know why so many people use it in the first place, most of the time it said the servers are too busy or some other shit.
That's cause they have few unlimited slots. Kind of forces you to want a premium account. Which is stupid, why would I pay for something, when I can the same thing free elsewhere?
As stated before megaupload is better.
I guess the crime of not paying doesn't pay!!! xD You hear me yea?
No, that was a stupid.
Who gives a crap about Rapidshare. Filesmelt, Mediafire, and other painless upload sites are just as good. Maybe slower download speeds, but 99% of the people who us RS don't have premium, so the slightly longer download would make up for that 30-60 second waiting time.
eh i prefer ifile.it decent speeds no waiting shit parallel downloads etc
I guess the crime of not paying doesn't pay!!! xD You hear me yea?
I no don't, and I never want to.
:tinfoil:
shit is this gonna happen to pirate bay?
No, because there, they don't care about copyright infringement. Its in the name you know. They were charged with aiding copyright infringement, lost, fined and still haven't done a thing to change.
I never knew rapidshit had copyrighted downloads
I never knew rapidshit had copyrighted downloads
comeon, everything has copyrighted downloads.
I never knew rapidshit had copyrighted downloads
90% of what there hosting is copyrighted.
People still use Rapidshare?
People still use Rapidshare?
with rapidshare i can get my linux distros with 350kb/s with torrents i get only 20kb/s :c
This'll be the death of Rapidshit, they're mainly used for piracy as far as I can tell.
Rapidshare's PR department already confirmed that these are FAKE MAILS and not correct. They are sent by phishers to keep the owners of the stolen accounts from wondering why they can't access their account. Move along people, nothing to see here.
People still use Rapidshare? I stopped using them ages ago. Downloads are way too slow. MediaFire and Megaupload are examples of good file hosting sites.
You are a bad reader. This is related to the premium accounts. With a premium account you get to download with full speed. I hit 2,2 Mb per seconds at my friend's house.
