• Making a mod, What should a start with first?

I'm currently trying to make a mod. ( I am an absolute beginner, btw) This leads me to think what should i start out with first, and how should i do it?
Depends on what kind of mod it is.. If it's singleplayer, the story and the characters. Developed characters can shape a game entirely. Multiplayer, probably just the maps. I don't know much about multiplayer games.
At least tell us what game you're gonna use
Concept art, plan your levels. Don't jump right in without any ideas of what you're going to do.
Judging on the insufficient amount of information that you've provided, I'm going to jump to the conclusion that you have absolutely no idea what you are doing. I don't think making mods from scratch using SDKs is the right path for you at all.
Start by thinking of your title during development of this mod. I think the most appropriate title to bestow upon yourself would be "ideas guy" which is a very prestigious and important role in the development of video games.
concept art, general idea(themes and settings, a story you want to tell.) find a team. Make sure to stay open from ideas fromt he team, do not act like "hurr durr im the modmaker it was my idea now make crap for me", if you aren't paying them you should let them have some influence too.
Okay, lets say I'm going to use source and will be single player, I've already collected my ideas and done some concept art. What should i do now?
you should really start with a story and any special game mechanics first, as that will impact the environments and character design. But thsi is your first mod, so basicly play with everything and sorrta make a tech demo.
Okay for a story, would it be okay to put in 18 different places your character has to go through? And i'm not sure what you mean about special game mechanics. Would that mean secret things or golden weapons?

The source engine isn't the best for special mechanics, and since you're beginning, game mechanics take forever to perfect.
Oh god this thread is making me cry with laughter. First of all the redneck: "what should a start with first?" Then the complete cluelessness of what the hell he's doing then he's saying special gaming mechanic's is about golden guns.
Okay sumap makes sense thanks. As for special mechanics, i didn't really plan any yet so that's good :)
