I setup a box here with an MSI 865PE Neo2-Platinum which supports dual channel PC3200 400mhz DDR ram so I dropped three 1gb sticks (which according to the manufacturer were dual channel capable) into it and at POST it tells me that the ram is running in "Single channel/virtual single channel mode".
I checked the BIOS but thee is of course not option to force/enable dual channel mode so what gives?
If I can run dual channel, it would be nice to use it as it improves the ram throughput.
Dual channel needs even numbers of sticks.
:downs:
Well then there's my problem. :frown:
Too bad I can't add a fourth stick. The board has four slots but will only detect up to 3gb due to the 32-bit limitation. I'm guessing they assumed that you were either using two 1gb sticks or four 512mb sticks.
sigh
4GB minus VRam minus a few other little things
it couldn't hurt to add another stick in anyway to boost you up to the max, and you'll have that 4gb ready for if you get 64-bit

I dropped in a 512Mb PC3200 400Mhz dual channel capable stick into the last slot and the system didn't see it.
Either way, the Northwood Pentium 4 is not 64-bit compatible.
Why did you get a triple channel RAM kit if you want to run dual channel?

:cawg: Didn't know you could get triple channel DDR kits.
OP, you could also get 2*1GB + 2*512MB sticks, just make sure the channels are even (1.5GB in each channel, check mobo manual to see which slots are for channel 1 and 2), OR get another 1GB stick (the system will still probably be able to utilise a bit more than 3GB) , OR take one stick out (Why would you really need more than 2GB with a pentium 4 anyway?), OR leave it as it is, there probably won't be any real performance difference.
I need the extra gig because I need a considerate sum of in-ram swap space for what I'm doing (mainly photoshop, editing and other things which require large amounts of fast and temporary space).
Well, I got the ram now so I'll just keep what I got and live with it. I'm sure next time I upgrade I'll be using something that's a lot better.
You want matching pairs.
