CRANSTON, R.I. -- A tire came off of a van on I-95 in Cranston on Wednesday. It crashed into a car and sent the driver to the hospital. This comes just days after a man was killed after a tire flew off a flatbed truck and hit the man’s car.
Police said the tire flew off a van and hit a tire that was going the other direction on I-95. The van’s axle broke and the runaway tire crashed into a woman’s car. The vehicle is severely damaged, but the woman suffered minor injuries.
“It just went straight through that lady’s car on the passenger’s side,” said Jake Aiken, who witnessed the crash. “We immediately stopped -- me and a couple other gentlemen -- to see if she was alright first. Walking up to the car, I was just like, ‘Oh my God.’ If this thing would have been a foot over on the driver’s side it would have been a totally different situation. She got lucky.”
On Monday, a 400-pound tire that was cargo on a flatbed truck flew off on I-93 in Somerville. The driver of the car hit by that tire was killed. That investigation is ongoing.
Police are treating Wednesday’s incident as a simple accident and charges are not expected to be filed.

BOSTON -- A 27-year-old Lynn man was killed Monday when a loose 400-pound tire smashed into the car he was driving on Interstate 93 in Somerville.
The crash happened just after 3 p.m. near the Somerville-Medford town line on I-93 North near Sullivan Square. A Sullivan Tire flatbed was carrying a load of tires, and one of the tires flew off the truck, smashing the car, police said.
"At some point, the load became unsecured and one tire fell off the truck, bounced on the roadway, where it struck the windshield of a 2003 Mitsubishi Gallant," Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.
The victim was later identified as Joseph LeBlanc.
LeBlanc was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died.
"This is horrific accident and words cannot express our sorrow. A tragedy like this only symbolizes how truly precious life is. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family and friends. In the 56 years of this company, this is the worst day in our history," Sullivan Tire spokesman George Regan said in a statement.
The truck was being driven by Gregory Ross, 62, of Merrimack, N.H.
The two leftmost northbound lanes of the highway were closed for a time, as well as the left southbound lane, state police said. All lanes were later reopened.[/release]

God damn tires.
I can imagine how scary that could be... seeing a tire coming right at your car.
There was an incident up here years ago where trucks were shedding axels and other junk and killing people. They spent a summer spot checking thousands of trucks and deemed more than half of them unsafe for road travel or had false certification tags.
I was waiting at a train crossing, a couple of cars back. This guy in a pickup truck tried to get around the cross bars, the train came by and promptly fucked up his shit. I'm not sure how, but one of the tires flew off, went really high into the air and landed a foot away from somebody's car.
You wouldn't think they're deadly, they're tires right? Well, if you've ever tried lifting one, and then imagine said heavy fucking tire rolling at 50mph+ then you get an idea of how insane that shit is.

Lifted sports rims and tires not too long ago. With the added rigidity of modern wheels, its like a huge projectile.
My calculations might be off, but that 400 pound tire moving at 50 miles per hour has a force 1400 times greater than a 9mm bullet moving at 700 miles per hour.
Imagine 1400 bullets hitting you at once.
I do feel sorry for the people that were hurt, but this is fucking unbelievable :v:
Must of been "wheely" good fun
This happens when truckers don't properly take care of their trucks and check their shit.
I thought of this.

They won't be so much hitting you as they will be hitting a large gelatinous mass that vaguely resembles a human being.

Why would you be a gelatinous mass before they hit you?
400 pounds is a ridiculously heavy tire.

The force depends of the impact, how fast the object loses velocity. But it has like 120 times more kinetic energy.
That would make me paranoid of trucks forever if that happened to me (and lived).
On a more humorous note, I thought of this:

Watch any of the final destination movies with friends, You'll have a blast at how terrible they are (Possible pun.)

They all kinda fall under the 'guilty pleasure' category but the 4th one is just downright terrible.

Number 4 was on a very low budget compared to the older Final Destination movies, the 3D effects looked like something from the late 80s through the whole thing.
