A few weeks ago the film’s co-writer, Damond Lindelof (The Leftovers), opened up about Khan:
When we did Star Trek Into Darkness for example, we decided that we weren’t going to tell people that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Khan. And that was a mistake, because the audience was like, ‘We know he’s playing Khan.’ That was why it was a mistake. But J.J. [Abrams] is telling us nothing about the new Star Wars movie and we love it. I’ve not come across a single person who’s like, ‘I wish I knew a little bit more.’ We are like, ‘Thank God he’s protecting us from all the things that will be revealed in the movie theater.’
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Abrams candidly reflects on his filmography, admitting the scripts for Into Darkness and Super 8 needed work:
At the end of the day, while I agree with Damon Lindelof that withholding the Khan thing ended up seeming like we were lying to people, I was trying to preserve the fun for the audience, and not just tell them something that the characters don’t learn for 45 minutes into the movie, so the audience wouldn’t be so ahead of it. I felt like, in a weird way, it was a little bit of a collection of scenes that were written by my friends — brilliantly talented writers — who I somehow misled in trying to do certain things. And yet, I found myself frustrated by my choices, and unable to hang my hat on an undeniable thread of the main story. So then I found myself on that movie basically tap-dancing as well as I could to try and make the sequences as entertaining as possible. Thank god I had the cast that we have, who are so unbelievably fun to watch. And an incredible new villain in Benedict Cumberbatch… I would never say that I don’t think that the movie ended up working. But I feel like it didn’t work as well as it could have had I made some better decisions before we started shooting.

The film's plot is just a mess of action scenes stringed together, and repeating Wrath of Khan was weak to begin with.
Should have come up with something new.
Wait, how did the audience know he was playing Kahn before the movie got to that point?

Because he was Kahn and anyone who knows who Kahn is will know who Kahn is.
Into Darkness was a massive turd, it was the first movie where I have ever been "woken up" in the middle of the immersion and actually thought to myself how stupid everything was. Not even Prometheus did that to me, I actually enjoyed that movie despite how retarded it was. Into Darkness is just so transparently pandering to fucking idiot pop-corn eating middle aged adults who don't give a shit.
Super 8 was fucking great though I still think thats one of my favorite movies, it's weird how it's almost kind of slipped under the radar now, I remember the huge hype up for that movie and not knowing what to expect and being pleasantly surprised.

J.J is a bit of a hit and miss at this moment but if it is a "hit" like Super 8, Armageddon, Lost and Cloverfield then it is a surprisingly good one.
I just hope he does not fuck up Star Wars.

well a vast Majority of the reviews have been positive, even ones from "ordinary fans" and not reviewers.

Seen it, he didn't
The thing with the Star Trek Into Darkness was JJ ST movies were more or less a reboot. The second movie of the original show was The Wrath of Khan. Then they cast Cumberbatch in an important shady, probably villainous role named John Harrison (super generic name). Only a fool would not suspect they were pulling a Khan.
With Star Wars it made sense to keep as many things secret as possible because we were getting a completely new Star Wars movie. [sp]Shame it's a remake of A New Hope.[/sp]

Well, I don't think Into Darkness was his total fault. There are many many different reasons why a directors portfolio is hit or miss, it could be a different number of things for different movies and directors. There are so many variables to movie making, being a director can be insanely stressful if you are actually trying to achieve quality. And some people just want to avoid confrontation if things aren't exactly going a good way.
I really think JJ is a talented dude, a lot of his good movies you can tell he had more creative control over.

I'll be honest, I have huge reservations. It's definitely way ahead of the prequels, but the TFA was running on pretty much nothing but nostalgia fumes in a lot of places. Not sure how it'll hold up once people move a bit ahead.

funny how many 80s nostalgia films have been showing up for a while now, yet super 8 is probably still the most 80s film of the decade
JJ is Nostalgia - The Director, where as Into Darkness is References: The Film.
Still, hoping The Force Awakens is good.
