Comedian Louis CK has proved a point: People are willing to pay a reasonable amount of money for DRM-free content from a performer they love, even though it would be trivial for them to pirate the same content for free. Twelve days ago, Louis CK decided to skip the distribution, DRM, ads and everything else that goes into marketing and sale of a video, and simply offer the video of his latest performance on his website for $5. It took 4 days for Louis to earn $200,000, and another 8 days to earn a whopping $1 million. “The experiment was: If I put out a brand new standup special at a drastically low price ($5) and make it as easy as possible to buy, download and enjoy, free of any restrictions, will everyone just go and steal it? Will they pay for it? And how much money can be made by an individual in this manner?” explained Louis in a statement shortly after the video earned its first $200,000. Obviously, people do respect this approach, as proven by Louis’s success and similar experiments by Radiohead and others in the past. In his latest statement Louis promised to give part of the money to various charities and another part to his employees as a bonus, keeping only $220,000 for himself.

All of the buzz surrounding the video didn’t come out of nowhere: Louis has promoted it through various social media channels, including Twitter and Reddit. It’s hard to say how easy it would be for someone — even Louis himself — to duplicate this success. His experiment proves, however that people are willing to pay for content if you communicate with them openly, shed the DRM and keep the price low
Source He even said he went against ALL advice that was given to him by advisers and producers and such, they all told him he needed some draconian DRM or it wouldn't sell. Now he has made a record here for not following bullshit advice.
Now let's get the Big Boys to do this.
thats pretty awesome that Louis CK just became a millionaire most comics are doomed to a life of jealous squabbling and buying weed in the apartments of other comedians now everyone will hate poor Louis "Moneybags" CK
I wish I could make a million dollars at all throughout my life. Such a depressing life I shall lead.
He just confirmed on his Twitter he is giving $280,000 to charity. Why can't more people be like him?
wish I could make $1 million in 12 days...
His paypal didn't get shutdown? Amazing.
You just wait. It will be shut down for "suspicious activity."
Wait, he has "employees?"
I wonder how long it takes before another news story pops up about his Paypal account mysteriously being limited.
Here's the link to buy his $5 video. https://buy.louisck.net/
It shows that many people will go ahead a buy something if it is less trouble than it is worth to pirate it. I hope the media industry can learn something from this. Probably not sadly though.

He is a okay comedian.
hah his paypal is called pig newton
I guess I will buy it, I don't know why I didn't before Bought it, I'm not even sure I like Louis CK but it's $5 to support the cause and probably get some good comedy in the process
Ubisoft, take notes
I don't think he's great but I love what he stands for in this case, and $5 is nothing, so I'm buying it!
Bought it instantly, Louis CK is awesome
It seems he proved that you can make tons of money if you have an emotional connection with your audience, rather than "DRM-free is better".
I've actually never heard of him but I already like him. Sounds like a pretty chill guy.
thats pretty awesome that Louis CK just became a millionaire most comics are doomed to a life of jealous squabbling and buying weed in the apartments of other comedians now everyone will hate poor Louis "Moneybags" CK
Actually, no he didn't. Because he's awesome.
In his latest statement Louis promised to give part of the money to various charities and another part to his employees as a bonus, keeping only $220,000 for himself.

There is some sort of DRM. When I purchased the video, I'm only allowed to stream it twice and download it three times. I thought it was buy now; download it unlimited times. It's not a huge problem since it's just a movie rather than a video game (like Spore).
Probably to save on bandwidth or something
he does this, and he manages to pull off bits involving childrens genitals and the use of the word 'nigger' by a white guy. Is there anything he can't do?
Seriously though, this guy had 1 fucking million dollars, and he only kept 220,000 and gave the rest away to charity and his workers. Louis C.K. has just launched himself to being one of the people I respect most.
thats pretty awesome that Louis CK just became a millionaire most comics are doomed to a life of jealous squabbling and buying weed in the apartments of other comedians now everyone will hate poor Louis "Moneybags" CK
I was kind of under the assumption that Louis C.K. was already a millionaire.
Louis CK IMHO is a man of insane amounts of wisdom and logic beyond his years. Sure, he's just a comedian, but he's like George Carlin, he's something much bigger than that. It makes sense, and it's exactly what Gabe Newel does, you make something the consumer will enjoy affordable and not worth pirating, and you'll, in return, be rewarded. If you stack confusing and unneeded DRM onto it and make it costly, the DRM alone devalues it greatly and you see it being pirated. It makes absolute sense. I mean, why buy a game when pirating it means you get LESS restrictions and don't have to stay online just to use it? Pirating in that situation seems like the obvious way to avoid that crap.
He probably is; I mean I'm not informed on his entire finical income but he has his own show on right now and had one before. He's also written for various sitcoms.
