I used to be a fairly regular cannabis smoker, a weekend warrior mainly for a couple years. For various reasons I started to really hate the effects weed had on me, and it began giving me depersonalization\derealization paired with intense panic attacks\anxiety. Not only did this happen extremely bad when I was high, but lingered onto me and is still there, just not as bad. It's been a year since I've smoked and I'm wondering if it's worth it to try it again. I'm very hesitant because the effects felt % still feel absolutely horrendous. I'm just basically hoping that I might have a fun time and it will sort-of reduce the negative effects that are currently happening. Dunno man.
Take note of what strain you're doing. If you only know that it's "weed" then you're playing effect roulette.
in my experience, if you think something bad is going to happen, it's going to happen.
I've got that depersonalization\derealization combined with paranoia/anxiety feelings in the past months, when i finally - psychologically, 'cause it was basically the same strain - overcame the paranoia/anxiety effects i became just kinda anti-social ad unproductive, unlike my old self. So I took a step back from weed for a couple of months.
All I'm saying is that if you're not comfortable with the effects after your retry, you should just try something else then.
I experienced something similar when I was smoking nothing but Sativas; but went away when I switched over to indica. Were you smoking one particular strain? Were you around people you were uncomfortable with?
Will the lingering go away over time? It's making things pretty difficult even though I only smoked once.
Btw the negative effect was really, really intense even though I expected nothing of the sort.
Nope, it's gonna be like that forever now, that's why you should never try weed, even once.

I started getting these kind of symptoms when I smoked weed, one of the reasons i've cut back largely. If you're smoking a bong or pipe, try to just smoke a joint, I find that it gives me a lighter high that's nothing but pleasant, none of the anxiety or terrible insights I get when I take bong hits. Also, smoke with other people, not on your own. Or at least, that's what works for me. Good luck, anxiety on weed ain't fun friend!

don't smoke thinking it will cure your anxiety/depression/bad mood whatever. it will amplify any feelings you're having. set & setting
Until you sort the anxiety out, stick with indicas whenever possible. Sativas remind me of psychadelics, since your energy is amplified, so treat it as such: go with the flow, bond with your surroundings, and don't hold yourself back. Else, all that energy will turn inward, and you'll overthink like a motherfucker.
Weed doesn't create anxiety; it merely amplifies what's already there (including mental disorders), so figure out where it's coming from. (DP/DR/Panic attacks are all paradoxes of fear.) Again, be your high self; never forget that. If your friends are negative about that, then you'll know where your anxiety originated from.
I can never smoke without getting at least a little anxious (due to my parents not knowing, having to walk back into the house high as hell and avoid them) but I think it's pretty normal and I've grown into getting used to it. The best thing to do is surround yourself by supportive friends, not ones who sit there staring at your face for 4 hours going "ya high yet bro? I see your face turning white, hey guys he's going to pull a whitey!" and also make sure you're in a comfortable environment, I suggest a friends house who's parents know that he smokes and doesn't mind it. Being high outside isn't all that bad, but from my personal experience, once I get into crowded places high I get anxious.

haha! I know this feeling. My parents hate anything smoking. I'm away at college, but when I go home I feel like I'm in high school again, having to sneak around to make sure they dont find out.
take some benzos or drink some alcohol, that should help with the anxiety and paranoia. Idk what would help with the depersonalization though
Like many have said, you need to be in a comfortable environment, whether it be by yourself or a group of good people. You can also start out smoking just enough to feel it, but not enough to get really high and then increase how much you smoke over time.

Generally a good rule of thumb not to use harder drugs to compensate for lighter drugs side effects.

I'm just talking about short term solutions, though. A long term solution would be to just not smoke weed.

Yea, but a short term solution can easily become a long term one if the user starts to enjoy the other drugs as well.
I just drink herbal teas that help with anxiety like lemon balm,
then prior to smoking I remind myself that I have made the choice to smoke and I am entitled to enjoy myself, there's nothing to be anxious about as I know i'm not going to die no matter what
seems to release me of any anxiety I have going in
well i usually just get really drunk and have lots of unprotected sex to set my anxiety off

This is because all people want to grow these days is headfuck sativa skunk, it's all the larger growers seem to pump out.
Everyone's brain is different. It sounds like yours reacts badly to psychedelics like weed (actual condition), and its not going to change.
I've had this same problem earlier too
its just that your conscious when your smoking
i tried getting back but it was worse, its tough to remove your conscience from it now
don't get back OP
