As many of you have been tracking the totals carefully up to the last minute, you’ll know that the Super Smash Bros. Melee scene has taken the top spot, with an incredible donation total of $94,683. The first congratulation must go to them, and we’ll be very proud to host the title that has generated such incredible support from its players as our 8th official game.

Regrettably, we’ve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee for Evo 2013. In light of this, we must make the following changes to the schedule.
UPDATE:
I’ve just receive word from Nintendo that the Evo Smash Bros. Melee stream will be allowed to proceed. We will be restoring the original stream and tournament schedules. Obviously this is a huge relive for all of us here and we’re thrilled that the world will get to see the best Smash players fight it out this weekend. Thanks to everyone online who supported both Evo and Smash, and thanks to Nintendo for allowing us to stream their game.
Oh come on Nintendo
Are you fucking serious
Modern Copyright law is ridiculous
IT'S A FUCKING GAME, NINTENDO!
If anything really, its more visibility for the new SSB game
What is it with Nintendo and clamping down on fan broadcasts lately? It seems like all it will achieve is a PR hit, however small, and rightfully so IMO.
Christ, what does it matter, Nintendo?
It's not like it's gonna hurt your business, for crying out loud.
I don't get why they would have a problem with it. Its not like the stream is devaluing a (at this point) 12 year old Gamecube game. And its not like Nintendo is going to lose money because (a) its 12 years old and (b) its a video stream. They are simply watching someone playing the game, not pirating it.
This is going to a PR nightmare for Nintendo.
nintendo, my greatest friend, my greatest ally...
i'm torn...

They already 180ed that one.
I knew a few people going to EVO specifically to compete in the Melee tournament. :(

It's still present at EVO, it just won't be broadcast.
Between Nintendo's reluctance to include modern online multiplayer features in their games and their complete obliviousness when it comes to how quickly bad PR spreads in 2013 I can only conclude that nobody at Nintendo has heard of the internet before

Does the Wii U and 3Ds both use friend codes still?

Nintendo's obliviousness is both one of their greatest strengths and weaknesses.
I just died inside.
Just for a little backstory:
Armada, possibly the best player in the world, by far the best Swedish player in the world and the best Peach player in the world had retired. Fans raised money to fly him over (his little brother too) to EVO and he'd pay back all the fans with the prize money he'd almost definitely win.
GUESS THE FANS DON'T GET TO SEE THAT, THANKS NINTENDO.
100 MegaStalins of oppression.
This is apparently the largest Smash Bros tournament to ever take place.
And Nintendo blocks EVO from streaming it.
Nintendo is not rainbows and sunshine guys, I kinda suspected this from their earlier restrictive procedures on youtube and the like. Nintendo has been doing everything wrong lately.
I guess the suits want people to not be sold into SSBM and instead get good PR for the WiiU and SSBU/SSB4/SSB3DS...
I just want to know why. What is Nintendo's reasoning for this? What is their official line?
Perhaps EVO should have secured the rights to use the games before having people raise $90,000 in a contest?

because making money off of other people's work is a pretty shitty thing to do.

No they're not. They make money based off the comedic value, not off the game itself.

They've been having smash bros melee since fucking 2007, if they wanted to complain they should have done it then. Please know about shit before you try to shoot shit.
And about the lpers, no one watched them for the game, they watch it for the player.
Does the Wii U and 3Ds both use friend codes still?
The 3DS does, but I don't know about the Wii U.
I agree with Zeke, it just seems like Nintendo is way behind the times when it comes to online stuff. One guy on the 3DS thread (I think?) lost all of his digital-bought games because the console broke and he had to get a replacement, and the eShop account is tied to a specific console rather than a username/password as would be sane to do.
this honestly doesn't surprise me, Nintendo has never been as receptive of fan events and fan projects. I notice this for most Japanese devs in comparison to Western devs come to think of it
it's like fans are in this sphere, this "fanzone" to them (don't take that last part seriously :v:)

lets plays are not really "making money off of people's work." videogames aren't like movies where everyone's experience will be the same, because you're watching a specific person play a game a certain way
I just want to know why. What is Nintendo's reasoning for this? What is their official line?
We don't know at the moment, all we know is that EVO claims that NoA said no.
Just to balance out Nintendo's karma: http://www.screwattack.com/news/nintendo-refuses-layoff-staff-profit
Their PR department is going to have a fit. Chances are it was some out of touch idiots in the legal team that made this happen.

I'm not going to comment on the morals of it - but either way, Nintendo was to be the only one claiming back the ad revenue (that I'm aware of). For several years people have been earning money (rightfully or otherwise) LPing games from all kinds of developers, and for Nintendo to suddenly step in in 2013 not only looks strange and about 5 years late, but makes them look like the bad guy next to all the other developers. Whether or not you agree with LPers earning ad revenue, it was clearly insane for Nintendo to make such a decision.
