which is better and have's a larger player base..?
IMO 2004 is just overall a lot more fun and likely has a bigger player base that isn't decade old vets who will stomp you into dust.
..so it's better for newbie's..?

Well it's like, and it happens with a lot of games, after all these years the main playerbase is the people who have literally played it nonstop for 10 years so they're insanely good.
2004 is just better overall in my opinion with the vehicles, space battle maps, weaponry, and I'm sure you can find some kickass custom maps.
UT2004 is one of the best games of all time.
I feel that both of them are pretty good. I'm more attached to UT99 since that's the game I'm more familiar with, but UT2004 is also pretty good.
I suppose you could go with JCDenton's advice.
I'd say UT2004 for now, then get UT99 later. I grew up with 99 and still prefer it to this day, but your ass will be reamed if you go online without prior experience.
Get both, both are absolutely excellent and have game-play differences that make them both worth owning.
I feel like UT99 is the better designed game, and it also has a drastically larger playerbase if I remember correctly. However, 2004 has fucking vehicles, which makes it worth buying anyway.
Get 'em both.
ut99 has a better feel to it with style and design, as well as a far better, and tighter set of controls, but ut2004 is more updated. ut99 still looks oddly very good today, despite the clear age, because it used refined technology. Ut2004 looks better but also, a bit odd, as they were experimental in the technology.
they very much are equally matched and unique games
I agree, don't get ut3 it's a mistake and completely bad
they replaced the AI with shit. I could 1v1 tie a godlike bot with a controller that massively lowers my accuracy and everything the ai was so bad. UT99/2004 has MUCH smarter ai than that
ut3 is like the casual gamers edition
also should look into unreal gold, the original, it has an awesome campaign
the community is still active however you'll need to find the master server the current community uses, as gamespy died, as did the original master server.
from what I remember it's a pretty nice group of people but I doubt there are many servers left at all

The original Unreal is one of the best singleplayer shooters I've ever played. The setting and level design is perfect and it somehow manages to tell a great story without much dialogue.
If it was a few years ago, I'd say the ragdoll physics give 2k4 the edge... But now you get those in pretty much everything.
UT2k4 was the first place I ever saw them, and I thought they were the most brilliant and hilarious thing ever.
Personally I prefer UT99, but both are really, really great.
Just wait until the steam summer sale and get the whole Unreal franchise for $9.99 because both UT99 and 2K4 are fantastic, as is Unreal Gold. UT3 is just there for free with a $10 price tag with everything together.
Honestly that's your best bet, because regardless of which one you pick you're still missing out.

The original Unreal for me had great locales (a fucking spire with takes you to flying city) but the maze-like level design with no directions killed it for me, I absoluted hated pulling a lever that would open a random door on the other side of the level only to pull another lever to open a door somewhere in the level. Thankfully only a few of the levels were like that.
Go for UT2004 and get it from GOG while youre at it
when is the sale because everyone on l4D2 are asshole's..
