2:00 pm [GMT] Egypt's military council will issue a statement immediately following meetings with leading political figures, a spokesman said

16:45 [Egypt time] Tahrir Square is starting to fill up with anti-Morsi demonstrators, with the central square partially full while surrounding streets are still relatively empty. Thousands are also starting to flock to Alexandria’s Sidi Gaber train station to demonstrate.
There are also reports of anti-Morsi demonstrators gathering in Sharqiya, Menoufiya, Port Said and Mansoura.
16:40 The rhetoric of the Islamist supporters at the Rabaa Al-Adawiya press conference was largely defiant, like President Morsi's speech last night.
“We call upon all Egyptians to take to the streets and stand against the attempt to overthrow legitimacy,” Islamist politician Magdy Hussein stated.
He further asked protesters to raise their national identity cards as proof of them being Egyptian, claiming police chose not to protect them during the clashes on Tuesday night because they were told “you were not Egyptians”.
16:30 The military's 48 hour deadline has now expired. No signs of a statement so far.
BBC will be broadcasting a 'State TV statement' here, not sure if it's from the army or Morsi though
The Egyptian presidency said on Wednesday a coalition government should be part of a solution to the country's political standoff but appeared to offer no new compromises as a deadline set by the army for a powersharing agreement elapsed.
A statement reiterated that President Mohamed Mursi held opposition parties responsible for obstructing a political initiative that would also set up a panel to prepare amendments to the constitution passed into law last December.
BBC are calling the statement "Egyptian government statement on Mohammed Morsi", read into that what you wish.

shit is going down yo
I say reject any compromise. You can't form a coalition goverment with islamists

If 20% (Random less-than-50%-number-pulled-from-ass, not sourced) of Egyptians believe in Islamism as a form of government, then I do believe that they should have the 20% representation any political party with that support would get. Just because I radically disagree with them doesn't mean that they're invalid as a political party.
Egyptian TV is saying Morsi has been placed under house arrest, no confirmation yet

Edit: BBC says an advisor to Morsi is denying this

Yes, but make sue they were not servants of the old regime.

Unless servants of the old regime has X% of the population's support, in which case they should have X% of influence.
Democracy up dis bitch, yo.
Reuters has a live feed of the crowd:

BBC have dropped the bit about Morsi from the title, did they jump the gun / already been briefed on the contents of the statement?
Morsi should have been step down.
Anyone wanna tell me how Morsi managed to fuck up so catastrophically? I haven't been following this.

As far as I can gather, Morsi was basically Mubarrak 2: Islamist Boogaloo.

Iv gotta say this is the politest coup I have seen in a while, they even gave notice.

Sorry, but democracy is a failed system.
People are too stupid to decide what should happen to themselves, let alone what should happen to others.
If 20% of the population supported a party openly advocating murdering every first born child, would you support that party getting in to the government because "Lol democracy"?

Hell yeah I would. Kids are assholes.
1650: Egypt's security services have placed a travel ban on President Morsi and senior Islamists - AFP.
This is getting very widely reported

So then what? Peace through tyranny or some non sense? No government like that has ever worked ever.
If people vote for a party that bases itself on the sacrifice of kittens, and that party wins the majority, that means the majority wanted that party to win. If the majority vote for in Islamist politicians, then that means they wanted Islamist politicians.
Also, democracy isn't a failed system, merely a flawed one. Every system is flawed, and democracy is much less flawed than so many others.
Islamist governments are not necessarily bad, I am still sticking to that.
This one, however, definitely was.

You are right, but while there are flaws with democracy, this is one of the best ways to balance personal freedoms with governmental stability
[editline]3rd July 2013[/editline]
Also every system has flaws, and most of them are ridiculously problematic flaws at that.

Except that wouldn't happen because human beings are self preserving by nature and any nation that has done that in the past was probably outed from our genome by natural selection.
Your statement is as dumb, null and void as saying "what if 80% of the population turned out to be alien shills from the planet mars? HOW WILL YOUR DEMOCRACY WORK THEN, HUH??!!
Not to mention the fact that the "what if's" of a dictatorship are far scarier than the ones for democracy.
Aaaand to bring this back on topic slightly, apparently tanks are rolling down the streets.

I'm waiting until a news camera spots them. The Muslim Brotherhood has every reason to sensationalise events

There we go

depends on the implementation of said democratic system. The USA version is too heavily flawed to keep the narrative of an influential vote going. not so with good old x% of vote means X% of seats.
So the coup is undergoing at the moment? Let's just hope no more blood is spilled.
And that the transitional council to be put in place is fair to the egyptian people. This shit has to stop.
Soldiers have showed up at a pro-Morsi rally in Nasr City

holy fuck, shits really going down
I like the BBCs fair and balanced approach, with pro Morsi protests on one side of the screen and anti on the other side.
Does the "I love baton" guy still hang around? Would love it if he could give us news on what's going on like he did back then.
